PHOTO-A-DAY CHALLENGE
One Week in Malta
Week 141 of the photographic documentary of my daily life
In the first two weeks back in Germany, I mainly complained about how cold it was. And I’m usually not the negative kind of person, but we arrived as a cold front hit Europe. And we came from Africa. We didn’t just get a culture shock but a climate shock as well.
However, after working for one week and jumping out of a plane at -25°C we weren’t through the worst. Another weather front moved across Europe, covering most of the continent in a thick cloud layer, including daily rainfall. Not the kind of skydiving weather.
The consequences for us were no work for an entire week. No work means a holiday in our ears. We don’t fuss around for long and make spontaneous decisions.
We had hoped for some work on Thursday, but it was raining all day. I ended up facing the truth, sat down with a pile of paperwork, and got started with my tax returns.
But in such miserable weather, I needed some wine to stay warm and motivated.

Having the laptop right on the window overlooking the meadow at the edge of the forest, I got distracted from doing the tax returns more than once. But who would blame me?
Look at the distractions I had. A couple of deer were walking out of the woods, peacefully grazing in the meadow.

On Friday, we were still on standby until lunchtime when the boss called the entire weekend. No work until next week Thursday. It wasn’t totally unexpected, and we had thought already about driving somewhere, but since the weather was bad all around us, we thought about flying instead.
Ever bought a last-minute flight? This was our first one and it was certainly spontaneous. We booked the flight when the online check-in was already open. The cheapest flight we found directed us to the Island of Malta. As far South as one can go in Europe, I’d say. So maybe we get some sunshine down there, we thought.
And a few hours later, I found myself looking out of the window flying above the snow-covered mountain peaks of the Alps. I did book a window seat, but as it was so spontaneous, I didn’t even think about which landscapes I’d be able to see from above. What a surprise.

The next morning we woke all fresh and excited in the heart of the city. Exploring the capital was the day’s schedule, and we were blown away by all the history we found throughout Valetta.
Valetta is just one fortified city. Churches, castles, and fortified buildings all around. It was a surprise for both of us. We didn’t have time to do any research on our destination as we booked hours before take-off and were therefore positively surprised by what we found.

On Sunday, we left the busy side of the island of Malta and headed to the other side. Visiting a market and then hiking along the coast was the day’s itinerary.
When we passed St. Peter’s Pool on the east side of the island, we couldn’t hesitate and jumped into the freezing Mediterranean Sea. It was a temperature shock for our body but a refreshing jump for the mind.
We laughed.

And since we enjoyed hiking along the coastline so much, we planned some more of that on Monday. Booking us in for two nights in a guesthouse near the old capital of Mdina, we went for the Dingli Cliffs.
This is the island’s highest point at 250 meters above sea level. The cliffs below reach straight out of the ocean, making up for a spectacular coastline.

And for our last day in Malta, we had another hiking adventure planned. Starting out at Golden Bay on the west side, we wandered along the coastline South until we didn’t want to walk anymore.
Flowers were blooming, the sun shining and a strong wind was blowing. However, none of this stopped us from doing another jump into the cold ocean.
“When are we gonna be back in Malta?” David said before jumping off the cliffs. And he’s right. Possibly never.
Live life with no regrets, they say. And so we did.

It appears to me as if this week has flown by in a blink of an eye, but I know it didn’t. We experienced so much. Made a load of memories and have countless stories to tell from the adventures we took.
Off we go again. Back into the plane heading north again. Without sadness for returning home. Because this was an unexpected break-away. And what a wonderful one. These spontaneous trips are always the best.
And the last surprise was when I looked out of the window and spotted the city. Rome. Right there. And if you zoom in at the right spot, you might even see the Colosseum.

I know. It was once again one special kind of week…
This has been my week in photographs. 7 days. 7 photographs. Anyone can join. Once. Or weekly. It doesn’t matter. We welcome everyone! Dennett started this photography challenge in 2020 and many have participated ever since.
