Nature Prompt: Second Week of May — Cool Breeze

Dear Reader,
I would like to thank Sahil Patel for the writing prompt he provided titled “Cool Breeze” and his article titled
He is a talented and accomplished writer and editor for the online magazine titled Reciprocal. I have read many of his articles and he brings out the best in himself and anyone who follows his lead.
Introduction
When I first saw this writing prompt, I thought to myself that this prompt could lead in more than just one direction. Sure, the temperature of the air is one of those, but did you know there are other ways that “cool breeze” has been used in the past or is still being used today? I went to the internet and found out that these words have been used in various contexts. For example, consider the following:
Music
An American rapper and member of the Dungeon Family is named Cool Breeze. His debut solo album titled East Point’s Greatest Hit was released in 1999. He joined a group of two other rappers in 2001 in the group called Sniper Unit and became known as Freddie Calhoun.
The song “Dirty South” featured him and was the origin of the 1996 Billboard 100 single on Goodie Mob’s debut album Soul Food. His 1998 single “Watch for the Hook” reached the Billboard 100 and was #1 on the Billboard Rap charts. Cool Breeze (rapper) — Wikipedia
Movie
On a different note, there was a movie made in 1972 titled Cool Breeze and the star in the movie was Thalmus Rasulala (Sidney Lord Jones). He was the leader of a group of criminals that gathered in Los Angeles to rob a bank. Their goal was to find a new bank. This was a remake of the movie “The Asphalt Jungle.” The Asphalt Jungle movie was made in 1950 and was about a jewel robbery in a Midwestern city. Cool Breeze (film) — Wikipedia
G.I. Joe Team
A member of the G.I. Joe team that specialized in reconnaissance was named Cool Breeze. He joined the G.I. Joe team just before the Joes fought their biggest battle yet in the Middle Eastern nation of Benzheen. He took a bullet meant for another member of Joe’s team and died. He was given a hero’s funeral at Arlington National Cemetery. Cool Breeze | Heroes Wiki | Fandom
Joe Breeze
A man by the name of Joe Breeze (I am assuming he is cool) is an American bicycle frame builder, designer, advocate, and participant in the sport of mountain biking. He is credited with designing and building the first all-new mountain bikes that riders called Breezers. He was an accomplished road bike racer and was among the fastest downhill racers at Repack, mountain biking’s seminal race.
He won 10 of the 24 Repack races between 1976 and 1984. He was a charter member of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and was inducted in 1988. He was featured in the 2007 documentary film Klunkerz: A Film about Mountain Bikes. Not sure about you but in my book this guy deserves the title of Cool Breeze. Joe Breeze — Wikipedia
Florida Is Our Home
My wife and I live in Florida and at this time of year, the weather is hot. That means that doing things outdoors after about 10 AM is not going to happen. For example, we are flower garden people, and we like to have flower beds free of weeds. We also keep our yard space weed free and mown. This all takes time and if the temperature is too warm it is easy not to go outside.
Since that is not an option for us, we try to time our outdoor fun to a reasonable time when we are not outside dying in the heat. For that to happen we either go outside in the morning or sometimes later in the evening before the sun goes down. Otherwise, it is tough to breathe the hot, humid air. We sweat like crazy and can’t wait to go back inside the house where the air conditioner keeps things cool. Then too if a cool sea breeze is blowing, we can tolerate being outside because it cools things down.
Sea and Land Breezes
Sometimes in the morning or late evening, we get a cool breeze that blows through our area from offshore. The sea breezes are gentle winds that develop over the ocean and blow onshore. These breezes cool things down after a scorching hot day.

We live in a coastal area here very near the Gulf of Mexico. There are two crucial factors of prevailing winds in coastal regions, land breeze, and sea breeze. The breeze that flows from the sea or large water body to land during hot summer days is called a sea breeze. This is the breeze that is felt at the beach in the afternoon, it’s a gentle cool breeze blowing inland.
Sea Breeze
A wind that blows from a large body of water toward or onto a landmass is called a sea breeze or onshore breeze. The cause of a sea breeze is the differences in air pressure created by the heat capacities of water and dry land. Sea breezes are more localized than prevailing winds. Sea breeze — Wikipedia
The sea or a body of water has a greater capacity for absorbing heat than the land. This means the surface of the sea warms slower than land. A sea breeze or onshore breeze happens because of the difference in air pressure between the ocean or water and dry land. The biggest reason for the difference is the heating capacity of water and land. A sea breeze is common along coastal areas after sunrise. Sea breeze — Wikipedia

A sea breeze front is a weather front created by the sea breeze. This is also called a convergence zone. The cold air from the sea meets the warmer air from the land and creates a boundary like a cold front. Cumulous clouds will be created if the front is strong. If the air is humid and unstable, the front can sometimes create thunderstorms.
If the airflow aloft is aligned with the direction of the sea breeze, then locations experiencing the sea breeze front passage will have fair weather. At the front, warm air flows upward and cold air moves in to replace it. This causes the front to move further inland. Sea breezes can reduce air temperatures. Sea breeze — Wikipedia
Land Breeze
A land breeze or offshore breeze is the reverse effect compared to a sea breeze. The sea has a greater heat capacity than land, so the surface of the sea warms up slower than the surface of the land. As the temperature of the surface of the land rises, the land heats the air above it by convection.
The warming air expands and becomes less dense, this decreases the pressure over the land near the coast. The air above the sea has a higher pressure, causing air near the coast to flow towards the lower pressure over land.
The strength of the sea breeze is proportional to the temperature difference between the land and the sea. If a strong offshore wind (5 mph or more) is present and opposes the direction of a possible sea breeze, the sea breeze won’t occur. Sea breeze — Wikipedia

Land Breeze Result
Because land cools quicker than water there are differences in their capacities to contain heat. This forces the daytime sea breeze to die as the temperature of the land approaches the same temperature as the water. If the land becomes cooler than the water surface temperature the air pressure over the water will be lower than the temperature on land. This creates a land breeze where the flow goes from the land to the sea.
When there is enough moisture and instability the land breeze can cause showers or thunderstorms over the water. When temperatures warm the land the next day the land breeze will die. Sea breeze — Wikipedia

Living Overseas
One of our favorite assignments while serving on active duty in the United States Air Force was to Portugal, the Azores Archipelago, and Terceira Island. We had a wonderful time there for the 2 years that we were there. One of the things that seemed to always happen there was for the wind to blow.
It kept the island cool in the hot part of the year and allowed you to be outside year-round. In the winter it could get cold there. This cold is nothing like the northern climate of North America. So, you could say we experienced cool breezes there.
Conclusion
My intent with this article was to let you know that there is more than one way to use the words “cool breeze”. I also thought you might be interested in knowing where that cool breeze that you may experience comes from and how it cools things down. Now whenever you feel the cool breeze blowing during the hot part of the year you will have some idea about what is taking place and can share with others.
