Farewell

A Goodbye or Just a Bye?

Photo by Volodymyr Hryshchenko on Unsplash

The mother fussed around her favorite snacks,

Making sure everything essential was packed.

Her daughter was going to college,

but it felt a piece of her heart was leaving too.

The father filled up the gas tank to full capacity,

Ensuring the car was in good shape for the upcoming ride.

He was dropping his daughter off at college,

But he felt like her childhood and his fatherhood were being dropped off too.

She was looking forward to joining the course,

Making new friends and meeting different people also excited her.

True, she was leaving behind a protected life,

But the freedom she’d been craving for long, pushed aside the nervousness and sorrow claiming to take over her exhilaration.

“Farewell, dear daughter”, crooned the mother.

“Goodbye, my princess”, croaked the father.

“Bye, mom and dad!”, exclaimed the daughter.

Off she went with a spring in her step,

Leaving behind two proud hearts as she turned and said, “I’ll see you soon”, before entering her new world.
