Fallow Fields, Fading Fields

A Poem

Photo by Dominique Knobben on Unsplash

It’s fading, the things we do the words we write

the inspiration behind it all: be internally motivated,

not externally motivated, they say, who are they? Those who have it all, perhaps?

Oh Society! Must every field and attempt and effort End up the same, again and again?

The struggles of struggle time, the planting seeds nonstop only to see birds have come

swooped down, eaten them all, nothing will grow now. Give it a rest. We start again.

We are forever starting again. We nap on couches we nap in beds we nap in baths, we wake up and start again.

It’s fall, it’s winter, it’s whatever it is, this season was supposed to produce we were supposed to reap,

maybe it’s just that whatever we find, one little plant, a weed of course, survived, but we’ve made it so that it is not enough.

We push and push and want it all, and we don’t think about the benefit to the birds and how we made them happy, right?

They ate, they took, they left full. We gaze out the window, we gaze at the ground, we are forever starting again, starting again, right now
