Facebook Launches First Cross-Platform Integrated Product — „Messenger Rooms“
Facebook has launched a new video chat product, called Messenger Rooms. Messenger Rooms makes it easy to spend time with friends, family, loved ones or people who share similar interests.
The concept is simple, anyone with a Facebook Account can create a room and invite others to join. The maximum amount of people who can be in one room at the same time is 50 individuals; Zoom has just gotten company from possibly one of it‘s fiercest competitors, yet.
One integrated Facebook/Instagram/WhatsApp Product
The fact that Facebook launched a video chat product is not the exciting part of the story, though. What is interesting, it is Facebook‘s first product that integrates both Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Portal devices in one.
Users can join a Messenger Room using the login and account that they prefer. This makes the barriers to entry extremely low for anyone looking to find a great way to video chat.
Facebook says it will soon add ways to create rooms from Instagram Direct, WhatsApp and Portal devices, too. This will be a game changer in the video calling landscape, in most western countries, as these tools are available across all platforms. It is even possible, to enter a Messenger Room without a Facebook account. A simple link click should suffice to join the video chat.
Regardless of whether users have an iOS or Android device, or use a laptop to connect, the combination of these products makes it very convenient to use Facebook for Video Calling/Conferencing.
„Facebook has felt the demand for real-time video. Between WhatsApp and Messenger, more than 700 million accounts participate in calls every day. In many countries, video calling on Messenger and WhatsApp more than doubled, and views of Facebook Live and Instagram Live videos increased significantly in March.“
What else is new? More Live Video Features
Desktop users are receiving a bit more love from Facebook, as it rolled out new features for Instagram on desktop, too.
More specifically, users can now watch and comment live videos from their desktop devices. The great thing about this is that it is now possible to follow live classes, tutorials and your favorite live influencers on a bigger screen.
The videos will be available for download after the broadcast is over and on IGTV.

Portal becomes useful for live streaming
The Portal might be one of Facebook‘s most underrated products. It is basically a tablet with great audio and video capabilities, but it has not received the love it might deserve.
One of the main reasons might be that Facebook has not taken full advantage of its software capabilities.
What is interesting about the portal, users are able to make video calls to Messenger and WhatsApp numbers right from the device. Essentially one of the first cross-platform services. However, the addition of Messenger Rooms will take the Portal to a whole new level.
Portal Live Broadcast to Pages
Live broadcasts were possible to your personal page on Facebook, right from the Portal. But user were unable to live stream to a Facebook Page or Group. This addition will make the Facebook Portal a great tool to answer customer requests, make quick tutorial videos from your shop or home and interacts will a larger audience.
Whereas a professional setup can cost thousands of (pick your favorite currency), a Portal device costs only a fraction of that. 150–250 USD can go a long way.
One of the coolest features of the Facebook Portal is that it follows whoever is speaking and keeps them perfectly in frame. This makes for an immersive video calling experience.
The Power Of Integrated Products
With Messenger Rooms, Facebook is finally bringing a product to the masses that merges their platforms.
There is power in numbers when it comes to social networks, conferencing and communication. The cross-integration of Facebook‘s platforms allows users to communicate more easily and lowers the barriers to entry for businesses to interact with their customers.
The COVID-19 pandemic might have just been the push Facebook has needed to take this step. But it is a good and exciting one if they can pull it off.
I am still waiting for a second version of the Portal+ to come out — with even better specs. And I hope Facebook will continue to invest in a more integrated product portfolio. This is a win-win situation for users and (small) businesses alike.
I am sure we‘ll see each other in some Messenger Room, soon.
