Advantages Of Working From Home & Working Remotely
Discovering your groove and getting into a routine to realise that remote working is the best way to live
With more and more companies allowing their teams to work flexible hours, it’s clear remote working is on the rise. Of course, the ability to work from home has been possible for years but working remotely full-time is certainly becoming more mainstream than ever before.
I’ve been working remote way before the pandemic and once you find your groove, get into a routine — it really is the best way to live. However, due to COVID-19, we’ve seen a sudden rise of remote working or mostly working from home. It’s clear that many are happier since the rise of remote working.
We’ve noticed that we are far more efficient whilst working from home.
Here’s a list of other advantages of working from home:
Manage your own schedule: you have the flexibility to take breaks and go for a walk at any moment during the day. You can eat lunch at whatever time is best for you and even have a little chat with your family during the day. Without any downtime to refresh and recharge, we’re less efficient, and will likely make more mistakes so it’s important to take regular breaks.
Zero office distractions: of course it’s still possible to be distracted with tools like Slack or Teams but there are ways of avoiding this, however when working in the office it’s almost impossible to avoid chatting to a co-worker about something you have zero interest in. There's no getting stuck in the kitchen, chatting absolute rubbish for hours.
No Commute: Early starts, tube delays, lots of money spent and many hours lost, pretty much sums up my commute for over 3 years. A daily commute to work is something I do not miss since going full-time remote. Contrary to people who say that a commute allows them to have a routine, there are other (and better) ways to create a morning routine and evening routine than getting up close and personal with sweaty people on the tube!
Flexible Wardrobe: You can literally wear whatever you want. I used to hate spending my mornings, waking up early in anticipation of being indecisive on an outfit suitable for the office. Now I just wear whatever I want.
Cheaper living: If you’re working and living in the same place then you immediately save money on no longer having to commute. If you’re working remotely from outside of your hometown, it's likely that you’re saving on rent. Digital nomads will often choose locations with a lower cost of living to benefit from the flexibility of being able to work and live from wherever you want.
Don’t get me wrong, you still have to be mindful that to work remotely, you need endless self-motivation. There is no one checking what time I started work, checking how long you took for lunch or if you are even online. So as long as you manage your time and do the required output of your day job, then the rest should figure itself out.
Overall, we gain an improved work-life balance. With flexible schedules, full control over your day it makes work a lot easier to balance with your life. For me, working remotely allows me the freedom to plan my own day, allowing my career and personal life to coexist — it’s a lifestyle choice I would never change.
