Summary

Russia has expelled 85 diplomats from France, Spain, and Italy in retaliation for similar actions taken by these EU countries following the invasion of Ukraine.

Abstract

In a tit-for-tat diplomatic escalation, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on May 18, 2022, the expulsion of 85 diplomats from France, Spain, and Italy. This move comes as a direct response to the expulsion of Russian diplomats by European Union nations amidst the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian War. The breakdown of the expelled diplomats includes 34 from France, 27 from Spain, and 24 from Italy. The French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Catherine Colonna, was among those who responded to the announcement. The expulsions reflect the deteriorating relations between Russia and key EU members since the commencement of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine, with international media outlets like SABC News and TOI World News reporting on the incident.

Russia Expels French, Spanish, and Italian Diplomats in what could be seen a retaliative ‘Hostile Act’

The Russian Foreign Ministry, in retaliation to recent expulsions from European Union nations, has expelled 85 diplomats. The diplomats, not from one country, number as follows: 34 from France, 27 from Spain, and 24 from Italy. Anyone with a modicum of intelligence, considering how Russia responds to everything unfavourable, should have seen this coming.

Russia, on Wednesday, 18 May 2022, announced the expulsions. It didn’t take long for Catherine Colonna, the French Ambassador to the United Kingdom, to respond.

The three countries have collectively tossed out more than 300 Russian diplomats since President Vladimir Putin’s forces invaded Ukraine. Many of the expelled Russian diplomats, despite denials coming from Moscow, were accused of spying. The expulsions from Russia didn’t go unnoticed by the international media.

“Russia said on Wednesday it was expelling a total of 85 embassy staff from France, Spain and Italy in response to similar moves by those countries, highlighting the damage to relations with leading EU members since it launched its war on Ukraine,” SABC News tweeted.

“Russia expels 85 diplomats from France, Spain and Italy,” TOI World News tweeted.
