Writing and Art two talents you can develop

I have loved to draw and write for as long as I can remember. I wrote my first poem, when I was seventeen, it was after a teenage crush. I did my first drawing when I was about six years old, it was an illustration from a Superboy adventure comic. I have always loved to express my creativity in art.

I published my first book of poems with 75 poems in 2010. Since that time I have always enjoyed writing and publishing my work on Amazon and other independent publishing platforms.

One year ago at the start of the lockdown, I bought the Clip Studio program online for doing illustrations. This was completely new to me as I had never done any digital art. After a while, I created a few digital art pieces, which I uploaded to Fine Art America and Saatchi Art.

It was during the period of the pandemic that I decided to create a science-fiction story and “Pandemic Blasters”, my first graphic novel was created.

The world has been overcome by a virus which is sweeping across countries and wiping out populations. This virus, which has reached the proportion of a pandemic is of unknown origins and is obliterating human civilization. This unseen enemy has crippled world economies and brought the world to its knees. There is no cure in sight. A group of individuals called the “Pandemic Blasters” appointed by the International Federation of the World are the only hope for the human population. People are now used to being in lockdowns, wearing face-masks and washing hands with disinfectant hand-washes constantly, in order to protect them from an unbeatable virus. Lives have been lost all across the planet and it seems that scientists have not yet created a vaccine to destroy this ravenous monster, which feeds on human lives. The Pandemic Blasters discover an ancient manuscript, which may hold the clue as to how the virus can be destroyed. But, will the team of Pandemic Blasters be in time to save humanity?

Here are a few ways to start creating your own artwork:

1. Start drawing and coloring. It is always difficult to do that first stroke and draw the first line.
2. Be bold and daring when doing your art, do not think about the opinions of others.
3. Select a subject and start doing the drawing. Get a Reference photo to begin doing the drawing, so that you do justice to the subject.
4. Draw subjects which you are interested in doing, places, nature, animals or people.
5. Copy works of other artists. Go to Art Museums or just copy the works of the Master Artists.
6. Take a drawing course. Keep a journal or Artbook.
7. Keep practicing your art, every day or at least once a week.
8. Be proud of what you create, do not hide it away from the world.
9. Start with simple illustrations, then move onto comic strips and later on graphic novels.
10. Try illustrating the stories and poems that you write.

I find it quite exciting when as a writer, I am able to do simple illustrations for my stories. It will take me some time before I can be an expert artist, but I will keep trying to improve my art.

I keep developing and improving my literary skills over the years. Learning never stops and practice makes perfect. I may never reach perfection as a writer and as an artist, but I will keep trying. Start drawing today, the world waits with bated breath to appreciate your artwork.
