Exploring the Writer’s Perspective on Interaction and Engagement
Should writers interact and engage or not?
Writers want people to read them
I am an editor and writer. As an editor, I read, edit, publish, interact, and engage with the writers. As a writer, I like to write, read, engage, and interact with other writers.
Editors are always interested in their writer’s welfare and they are happy when the writers interact and engage with each other.
I have been coaching many young new writers to read other people’s work with enthusiasm to get a return or reward for more people to read them.
After all every writer loves an audience. Who does not like a reader? When we see a best-selling book we aspire to be a hot seller one day.
I tell the writers that Medium is the best platform to catch an audience. You can find people to read you and give you feedback. The more people read you, the more you are achieving your target.
Many writers thanked me that they were slowly building a follower base and people were reading their stories.
What happened? The confidence level of writers increased and they went out and became regular readers.
Types of readers and writers
There are three types of readers in my opinion:
🍀A reader who reads posts every day and is hooked on to some regular subscribers. He is genuine and loves to read the regular subscribers. He manages to fit in or squeeze in the time.
🍀A writer who reads regularly its subscribers for sure and others posts that are of interest and some posts that come on its feed.
🍀A third category is recently formed where there are reading clubs for regular engagement and you find new writers and their posts.
There are merits in all three types of readers and writers.
The readers get regular subscribers and if they are professionals they just have time to fit in their schedule those posts that read theirs every day in their reading pattern,
Is this a read-for-read or is it affinity and confidence with certain writers that makes them repeat reading the same people every day?
I have some subscribers on my list who I must read every day. I wait and I look out for their articles. Wherever I am, I stop by and read and enjoy reading and sending responses to them.
🌹In the last three years, my base has increased a lot with regular commitment and interaction there has been a lot of engagement. Sometimes articles overflow or you get busy with other commitments and you have to read them in two or three days.
I am sure this has happened to others as well.
Some recent changes and how they impacted the writers and readers.
In August 2023, some changes came about on Medium that greatly benefitted people who already had a big base and were interested in genuine interaction and engagement with other writers.
With this change reading clubs were formed and suddenly there were some unusual activities. Those people began engaging who were earlier not to be seen.
Well, good luck! Hello! Join the tribe.
At first, Medium honored all the honest and genuine readers and writers who have been engaging regularly with others. Writers and readers were happy. They were being recognized by Medium. The others who suddenly appeared were also being rewarded.
Everyone was earning better than before and was trying to do even better. One month and a bomb exploded. Without a warning, everything went flat. Writers are sadly down in the dumps. Nothing to look forward to. In other words, writers are not motivated and it is important to give them confidence.
Now there is a lot of confusion for writers to engage or not engage. To write or not write personal stories? To write short notes or long essays.
🌹My humble submission is why have the regular constant, honest, continuous reader been demoted for no fault of theirs?
🌹Why have the genuine readers been mixed up with others and called the read for read breed?
🌹Why is it wrong to be in a reading club to engage and increase one’s reach? In any case, there is a limit to what the eyes will be able to read in one day. The unusual activity will die out as it cannot be sustained for a long time.
Futuristic thoughts:
I sincerely do hope that our writers and genuine readers will continue to read and write and not be disappointed, demotivated, and demoralized and take the changes as a bonus benefit for one month
I also feel that there will be better chances with more changes for genuine honest writers and readers so that they are able to earn Pizza money, grandkids' gifts money, and themselves a vacation out of genuine and constant engagement with writers.
I encourage and pat the backs of all new writers to begin engagement seriously to be read and appreciated.
The existing writers have developed their tribes and the stories they like so off to your paths.
Goodbye and good luck 💖
