Exploring the Power of a Happy List: Finding Joy in Everyday Moments

Uncovering Simple Pleasures: A Journey Through Mindful Appreciation

When I walk my dog, I like to listen to podcasts. I don’t have the headspace for anything too serious, so I like podcasts about celebrity gossip or biographical, true-life stories.

When I’m walking aimlessly and listening to these words, certain phrases jump out at me.

Often, they are just general, run-of-the-mill sentences that the podcaster is saying in conversation, but they can spark inside of me a train of thought that I can’t get out of my head for the rest of the day.

It’s most often where I find my greatest inspiration for my writing.

The past few weeks have been intense.

As the past year wound to an end, I hadn’t been my usual, optimistic self.

When I get like this, I know I have to retreat and ride the wave of discontent until it passes and the sun comes out again.

So when I recently took my walk, something said in a podcast episode made me think.

The question was asked, “What’s on your happy list?”

The podcast I was listening to wasn’t on the theme of life coaching or motivation; it was just a random conversation two characters were having amongst each other when this question was asked.

But it got to me.

It made me think.

What is on my happy list?

I don’t think about it in terms of what makes me happy in life, but more so, what has made me happy recently?

We always hear about being grateful and making gratitude lists as a way to stay mindful.

I’m not particularly into mindfulness, not that I don’t think it’s important; it’s just not something I think about all that often.

I do bang on about being grateful and being thankful for all that I have because I am full of gratitude and also because I want my kids to grow up to be good people and not little assholes who take everything for granted.

So here are some of the things that have made me happy recently; maybe my list will inspire you to consider yours!

  • When the weather started heating up, and I found an unopened bottle of chilled rose in the back of the fridge, I was overwhelmingly happy!
  • This past week has been school holidays for my three children, and I have managed to sleep in until 7.30 am; I was very bloody happy.
  • With the kids ALWAYS around, I managed to write and publish three articles. I don’t know how the hell I pulled it off, but as the good lord of writing knows, I was beyond happy!
  • When an online order I placed on a Monday arrived before Christmas, I was very happy.
  • When my 90-year-old grandmother (also known as “Helene the Fabulous”) came over, I watched her experience so much joy doing word puzzles with my most surly child. This warmed my heart and brought me extreme happiness.
  • When my husband came home from a boy’s night, so boozed out of his mind, slurring his words and tripping over his own calf muscles, then finally passing out fully clothed on the bed, thus giving me the almighty power of the living room remote control, chocolate to myself, and no chance of him begging for an evening pickle-tickle, I was relieved, thankful, full of gratitude, and very. Fucking. Happy.

Now that I reflect on my happy list, I am proud to say I can find joy in so many areas.

Sure, it’s easy to nitpick and get easily irritated over the little things, but it is just as easy to look a little closer and see the moments that do make us chuckle or even laugh and make us happy.

I’m skeptical that this mindfulness habit of creating lists of happy thoughts will turn into a regular thing for me. I don’t think I’m naturally inclined that way, and to be honest, I often struggle to even concentrate on making grocery lists. But, as it’s now 2024 and a new year, I’m glad I gave it a try.

So tell me, what’s on your happy list?
