A tranquil oasis away from the crowds of Oia and Fira

“The light of Greece opened my eyes, penetrated my pores, expanded my whole being.” — Henry Miller, American writer and artist

Pyrgos Kallistis, often referred to as the “hidden gem of Santorini,” is a picturesque village located at the highest point of the island. It provides visitors with awe-inspiring panoramic views of Santorini, including its renowned villages like Oia.

When you’re in Santorini, Pyrgos Village is conveniently located just 8 km (5 miles) away from Fira, the vibrant capital of the island.

During our May 2023 holiday in Greece, our tour guide suggested that my family and I take a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Pyrgos.

After the hustle and bustle of Oia and Fira, we were looking for a peaceful escape. Walking through Pyrgos’ quiet streets and scenic alleys, we were pleasantly surprised at every corner. The lack of crowds allowed us to enjoy the calm atmosphere of Pyrgos.

The village, tucked away in Santorini, had narrow streets that added to its charm, even though they were a bit tricky to navigate. It felt like stepping back in time and exploring a place rich in history. The well-preserved buildings and historical sites in Pyrgos reflected its rich heritage.

What fascinated us most about Pyrgos was the hidden gems waiting to be discovered. Every corner seemed to hold a secret, inviting us to explore further. We found quaint shops, cozy cafes, and charming corners straight out of a storybook.

It was a joy to wander around, letting the village reveal its wonders at its own pace.

Visiting the various churches in Pyrgos was essential. The village is home to several beautiful places of worship, each with its own architectural style and cultural significance. We were captivated by the detailed religious art and the spiritual heritage of the village.

Please take a moment to appreciate this little gem of a village straight out of a picture book.

History of Pyrgos

Pyrgos originally served as a monastery until the Venetians arrived in the early 13th century and transformed it into a fortified village, one of five such settlements on Santorini. The central tower stood within sturdy walls, providing protection against the pirates who plagued the seas.

Over time, as the pirate threat diminished, the villagers began to add windows and sheltered balconies, expanding the village beyond the castle walls.

During the 1956 earthquake, the Pyrgos castle remained relatively unharmed, but many houses were deemed unsafe and subsequently condemned. The upper floors of these houses were demolished, leaving the ground floors filled with rubble. As a result, numerous residents of the castle, compelled to relocate, constructed new homes on the lower slopes of the village.

Closing Thoughts

As we reluctantly bid farewell to Pyrgos, we couldn’t help but reflect on the profound impact this serene village had on our spirits.

It had provided us with a much-needed respite from the bustling tourist hotspots and allowed us to connect with the true essence of Santorini.
