Exploring the Boundless Possibilities of Leadership
Insights from Dr. Linda Hill’s TED Talk on Fostering Innovation in Teams
This week, I have been actively striving to become a social architect, the type of leader Dr. Linda A Hill, an esteemed professor of Business Administration from Harvard Business School, describes. I’m developing an environment where individuals can comfortably collaborate and express their talents and passions.
In her TED Talk, Linda Hill shares her research on managing collective creativity and how leaders can foster an environment that allows for innovation and collaboration within a team. She begins by discussing the traditional view of leadership, which assumes that the leader has all the answers and directs the team. I certainly do not know it all. I agree with Hill that this approach is no longer practical in today’s fast-paced and complex world. Hill proposes a new model of leadership that empowers team members to contribute their unique perspectives and talents.
“Leading innovation is not about creating a vision and inspiring others to execute it.” Linda Hill
According to Hill, there are three critical components to managing collective creativity: creative abrasion, agility, and resolution.
- Creative abrasion refers to generating new ideas through constructive debate and conflict. Leaders can encourage team members to challenge each other’s ideas and perspectives, fostering an environment where new and innovative solutions emerge. This concept drew me in; I can see its possibilities. Hill said, “Creative abrasion is not about brainstorming, where people suspend their judgment. No, they know how to have very heated but constructive arguments to create a portfolio of alternatives.” I’m interested in having this dynamism on my team. Respectful debate!
- Creative agility involves being able to adapt quickly to changing circumstances and perspectives. This requires a willingness to experiment and take risks and learn from failure. When I heard this one, I immediately started thinking about a project I am leading now. I imagine an idea for creative agility in inspiring people to change. We could make learning about and adopting the new system fun and engaging with a gamified training program that rewards employees with points and prizes for completing interactive challenges.
- Finally, creative resolution involves bringing diverse perspectives together to form a cohesive and effective solution. I felt a sense of satisfaction as I tackled this today. I believe it’s vital to foster an environment of psychological safety on our teams where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts and ideas without fear of judgment or criticism. So, we recently executed a large user engagement kickoff and experienced a few ‘hiccups’ in the execution. Today, at our debrief, I encouraged ideas we can experiment with and learn from the failures, treating them as opportunities for growth and improvement. I applauded the team for their tremendous effort and motivated them to strive for more ambitious goals for our next project.
“You have to unleash the talents and passions of many people and you have to harness them into a work that is actually useful.” Linda Hill
Back to her TED Talk — Hill also emphasizes the importance of diversity in a team and how diversity can contribute to collective creativity. She suggests leaders should seek team members with different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, which can lead to new and innovative ideas. I believe this wholeheartedly!
Change is hard. I have found that drawing on the experiences of change management practitioners with unique perspectives enables a more accurate comprehension of current and future work states. A diverse team can address the worries and desires of most stakeholders affected by the disruptions: employees, customers, and partners.
Overall, Hill’s talk offers valuable insights into how leaders like me can foster a culture of creativity and innovation within their teams. I appreciated her insights! By embracing the principles of creative abrasion, creative agility, and creative resolution and valuing diversity and inclusion, leaders can empower their teams to work together to generate new and innovative ideas.
“Our task is to create the space where everybody’s slices of genius can be unleashed and harnessed, and turned into works of collective genius.” Linda Hill
