Everything Fun Writing Prompt
Gratitude for Fun Buddies

Many countries have an annual holiday to thank those people and things that matter most to them. In that spirit, this month’s prompt invites you to write about the person or persons that you are grateful for because they have increased the fun factor in your life significantly.
The fun may include humor and wild adventures, but it could also be about stimulating conversations, loving support, a shared love for a particular activity, or whatever you consider fun.
If you think about what fun entails, it’s really about the experience of positive emotions. Of course, that is a simplistic explanation, but I’m not fond of detailed definitions of fun because it’s like trying to nail jello to the wall.
For this prompt, it would be helpful to tell us a little bit about your fun buddy or buddies, a story or two that illuminates how you’ve experienced fun with this person, and any other tidbits that help us readers understand the fun factor. As with anything related to fun, we’re not trying to limit you with these parameters. If you have something funner to write about, have at it. We love creatives!
In my personal life, my favorite fun buddy is my husband, James. We recently celebrated twenty years of marriage, which has been quite a ride. We’ve traveled to over forty-five countries and foreign islands together, we’ve lived in four states, and we enjoy doing fun things together like going to concerts, hiking, hanging out with our animals, and doing various projects around the house.
When I think about a defining fun moment, I think of being at the top of the Eiffel Tower with him on our honeymoon. As with many fun events, it was the build-up to the event that made it worthwhile.
I had been to Paris many times when I was a flight attendant, and we even stayed overnight at a hotel close to the Eiffel Tower. Still, I never chose to go to the top because I was waiting until I found a true love to go with me. I meant it somewhat ironic because I’m neither romantic nor did I want a serious relationship. As my mother used to say, I was “independent to a fault,” and I never wanted anyone to step on my freedom.
After working numerous trips abroad over the summer of 2001, I came home exhausted and very sick. James, only a friend then, insisted I go to a doctor. He loaded me up in his truck and took me. After getting a diagnosis of shingles, James took me out for a bite and helped bring me out of my slump. I realized that if he took such good care of his friends, I would be fortunate to call him a mate.
We were married about a year later. We went to Europe for our honeymoon and spent a few days in Paris. Standing at the top of the Eiffel Tower with my love by my side, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I knew I had finally found the best fun buddy I could imagine.
Not every moment has been fun, but we’ve laughed and cried — and everything in between. We’ve done our best to lift each other up through the dark days and coast joyfully through the good ones. I hope we get at least twenty more years of fun and laughter.
