Everything Around You Is Made of Waves

Ever since I was a young girl I’ve grown up wanting to know the “secrets of the universe” or more generally just understanding how things work. Questions like…
How does the sun work?
Why do black holes exist?
Can we go beyond our universe and into a parallel reality?
What happens if the moon gets knocked out of orbit?
Can humans be the only intelligent life?
bubbled in my head and once I found some “answers,” I had even more questions.
It’s like I’m drawn to the complexity of the universe and want to unravel it bit by bit. I feel a sense of longing when I look up at the stars, it’s a weird mix of despair and wonder.
There is something to be said about contemplating the vastness of our existence and coming to realization that life is much greater than just ourselves. Nature is the strongest force to exist, sometimes we humans forget that and have to bear the consequences *cough* climate change *cough.*
It’s this innate feeling of realizing reality is so much bigger than what we perceive. Everyone dwells in a small bubble on earth when there is a vast universe to be explored and understood.
There is a universe inside us and there is a universe outside of us and I want to figure out the connection between the two.
Look around you.
You are buzzing with life, with motion, with vibrancy.
And notice how in sync you are with everything around you.
You sit on a chair and that chair holds you, matter supporting matter.
Nothing is truly ever separate from anything else, everything is connected by this illusion of time and your existence is not separate from the universe.
What I am trying to say in less confusing words is that, humans aren’t just humans, we are not separate things that exist in this universe.
Everything is connected.
There is no “I” or “me” or “us” only “oneness.”
The word “universe” is derived from the latin word “universum” meaning all together.
Everything is “one” and for me this mystery is unraveled by understanding the properties of waves.
My Contemplations:
When I think about life and all the things within it, I think about energy. Energy means movement while the opposite, stillness, is adjunct to death.
Nothing is every truly at rest, things are always evolving from one state to another.
We perceive this change in states as information.
Information travels in waves, we interpret them as frequencies, vibrations, energy, etc.
We are able to see things because of the electromagnetic waves that enter our eyes, those waves are then transmitted through the neurons in our brain using electrical and chemical signals until we understand what we are seeing.
This happens continuously from the moment we open our eyes and when we close them at night, the basis of all this is the transfer of information using waves.
Most things are based on this interaction of waves to create our current reality. Breakdown matter and you’ll discover it’s just a form of energy.
Anything cyclical is a wave as well. Think about the seasons, New Year’s, your birthday, when you record the data that pattern that emerges is a wave.
Unnatural things (non-living) can be seen as wave forms to help understand the order of things in periodicity.
There is that saying “History repeats itself” and its an interesting phrase because to truly understand the meaning behind it, we have to internalize that events repeat themselves overtime no matter how big or small. This concept can be imagined through a wave that shows progression of time measured against something that repeats itself.
So I realize that waves are all around me, they form the very fabric of everything I know and can sense.
It’s like the magic behind how everything works in this world is shown in waves and that is a truly breathtaking realization to come to.
As someone who has been fascinated with quantum mechanics for a long time and worked on quantum computing technology, I realize that even the definition of existence can be realized through a wave.
I won’t go deep into the theory but nanoscale particles like photons, electrons, etc. can all be waves.
When we imagine the atomic structure we think of electrons as these small particles.
But now imagine that instead of small balls, electrons are waves. It becomes funky to understand how all this works but the takeaway here is that the smallest blocks of matter exists as waves and these waves are what build complex structures like the human body.
So if you break down a human into all of its electrons what you would actually have is a blend of waves that create a conscious being.
Waves can also be massive things, Einstein predicted the existence of gravitational waves but there was no way to prove it because no tools sensitive enough to detect it existed back then.
With the invention of LIGO it was proven that waves exist in the curvature of space-time itself when events like two black holes colliding create a large enough disturbance that it can be felt throughout space.
Imagine this:
- spacetime is a comfy mattress and earth a marble that I place on that mattress
- because of the weight of the marble it creates a dip in the mattress
- but somewhere further away on that mattress two bowling balls collide and fall down on the mattress
- this causes ripples all along the mattress and ends up reaching the marble that can also feel the impact of two bowling balls colliding.
That is in short what gravitational waves are, they create ripples in spacetime itself and that’s so crazy if you think about it!
I constantly think about forms waves around me and the more I contemplate on this idea the more I have to come to appreciate the beauty of life.
We live in an extraordinary stream of reality and understanding it in different ways is like gaining a new sense to view the world in.
