Everyday Extraordinary
Just look around — the phenomenal is everywhere

Finding the exceptional in the ordinary is the real extraordinary. Brianna Wiest
Open your peepers and look around. Extraordinary is everywhere.
Returning from my morning run, I traversed an old horse racetrack now serving as dog-walking terrain. Crunching across the expanse of ice, a chill bit at my cheeks. Both sets. The moon above was playing hide and seek with the crack of dawn clouds. Backlit, the heavens were a dried-up Zimbawbe riverbed in the sky.
My osteopath, eyes crinkling below pale eyebrows, rested a warm touch on my shoulder. Her t-shirt, slightly paler teal than my favorite dish towel, is emblazoned with the word Trust. She whispers encouragement. Blesses me with neck mobility.

The trail is slushy below our feet. Mounds of damp drifts brush the belly of my friend’s dog. His Toto tummy drips. Echoes of children giggling somewhere nearby bounce off the pine branches dipping to reach our heads.
“Do you hear that?” my friend asks, the loose leash swinging against her yoga pants as she swivels in different directions. “It’s a cardinal.”
I see it. Against the stone blue sky a spot of crimson. Hip hopping about the bare bones of an ancient apple tree, a burpy trill accompanies us on our walk.
Nestled amongst grandkids’ toys, my friend and I slowly inhale our coffee. Her loud tinkle-cackle laughter punctuates our conversation. I smell Java and her puppy’s breath as the beagle wiggles ever closer to my neck.
“That’s incredible!” My friend motions to her cat, perched as close to my thigh as it can be without actually touching it. “She hates everyone! And yet here she is, letting you pet her.”

Plain, ordinary bubble wrap. Stress release in a transparent twist. See-through domes crackling like a long weekend bonfire.
Simple. Ordinary. Everywhere. The exceptional surrounds us. We only have to free our senses and notice. What extraordinary is right there in front of you?
