Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die
We live in a society where get-rich-quick schemes are evergreen magnets. Everybody wants to get rich (as FAST as possible) but most don’t want to put in the work it requires to get there.
Don’t take my word for it. Just look at the number of articles across Medium promising a huge following, lots of money, or three topics to write about that will make you an instant success on Medium.
Hey, there’s nothing wrong with that and such articles indeed get A LOT OF ATTENTION … but you’re embarking on a journey of unhappiness. Why? Well, your main motivation to write will be to impress others.
I (really want to) write to express (myself) and not to impress (others). But fact is, I’m a human being like everybody else. So, does my heart skip a beat when someone claps or follows me? Hell yes! But is that my only reason for writing? Hell no!
If I’ve learned anything in life, it’s that everything has a price and you need to be ready to pay that price, be it hard work, perseverance, persistence, or long hours, … success doesn’t come for free.
After joining Medium I started posting stories whenever I had time. To make a boring story short, I have reached 30 followers on Medium over two months. WOOW, right!? Well, hardly. Yet, I’m surprised that anyone followed me … after all, I didn’t implement any of the suggestions offered by those evergreen articles.
Those looking for a shortcut to success may be shaking their heads now, but I’m in for the long game. As mentioned earlier, I aim to use Medium as a channel to express myself and share my thoughts, stories, and observations with you.
And since we’re busting myths — the last sentence above is a description of my very own niche … hint, hint…
Anyway, I’d better get back to writing (i.e., getting ready to die, so I can reach heaven)…
