# Summary

The website presents "Every Step You Take (OMG, Honey, Take the Photo Now!)," a parody of The Police's "Every Breath You Take," reimagined by The Parents to reflect the experiences of parenting.

# Abstract

The web content introduces a humorous take on the classic song "Every Breath You Take" by The Police, transformed into "Every Step You Take (OMG, Honey, Take the Photo Now!)" by the fictional group The Parents. This parody captures the joys and challenges of parenthood, with lyrics that playfully touch upon the constant vigilance and care parents have for their children. The article also delves into the original song's creation, revealing Sting's inspiration during a tumultuous personal time, and reflects on the potential for art to be misinterpreted based on the meaning assigned by its audience.

# Opinions

- The parody song humorously contrasts the watchful and sometimes overbearing nature of parenting with the original song's darker themes of surveillance and control.
- The original song, "Every Breath You Take," is noted to be widely misinterpreted as a gentle love song, despite its sinister undertones as described by Sting.
- The article suggests that the perceived taboo in a piece of art may stem from the audience's interpretation rather than the art itself.
- It is implied that even if an artist creates a work from a place of personal darkness, it does not diminish the potential for others to find beauty and personal significance in that art.

Every Step You Take (OMG, Honey, Take the Photo Now!)

(Sung to the tune of Every Breath You Take)

Every breath you take Every poo you make Every cup you break Every step you take We’ll be watching you

Every single day Every word you say Every game we play Every night we pray We’ll be watching you

Oh can’t you see You were born to me How our poor hearts ache With every step you take

Every pitch you make Every bone you break Every grade you fake Eat your greens and steak We’ll be watching you

Summer camp, we been lost without a trace We dream at night we can only see your face We look around but it’s you we can’t replace We feel alone and we long for your embrace We keep crying baby, baby, please

Oh can’t you see You were born to me How our poor hearts ache With every step you take

Every pitch you make Every bone you break Every grade you fake Eat your greens and steak We’ll be watching you Every pitch you make Every step you take We’ll be watching you

We’ll be watching you (Every breath you take, every poo you make, every cup you break, every step you take) We’ll be watching you (Every single day, every word you say, every game we play, every night we pray) We’ll be watching you (Every pitch you make, every bone you break, every grade you fake, eat your greens and steak) We’ll be watching you (Every single day, every word you say, every game we play, every night we pray) We’ll be watching you (Every breath you take, every poo you make, every cup you break, every step you take) We’ll be watching you (Every single day, every word you say, every game we play, every night we pray) We’ll be watching you

Here’s to better writing.

Notes about this song: In a deep creative state, all kinds of things come out of our subconscious. While the public gets to interpret and judge a piece of art however they like, artists always have their own story of creation. Before we condemn art by our current, always-changing standards of “culturally acceptable,” we should listen to the artist’s own story:

From “The Story of… ‘Every Breath You Take’ by the Police”:

Sting wrote it in the aftermath of his separation from Frances Tomelty, and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler.

The Independent reported in 2006: “The problem was, he was already married — to actress Frances Tomelty, who just happened to be Trudie’s best friend (Sting and Frances lived next door to Trudie in Bayswater). The affair was widely condemned.”

To escape from the public eye, Sting retreated in the Caribbean where he started writing the song.

Quotes from Sting:

“I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn’t realize at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control.”

“One couple told me ‘Oh we love that song; it was the main song played at our wedding!’ I thought, ‘Well, good luck’. I think the song is very, very sinister and ugly and people have actually misinterpreted it as being a gentle little love song, when it’s quite the opposite.”

Imagine if Sting had changed one single word, with “I’ll be watching you” becoming “I’ll be loving you.” Suddenly, this is one of the greatest love songs of all time.

Just remember, when you condemn a piece of art, it’s not the art that is necessarily taboo. It could be the meaning you assign it.

Every Step You Take (OMG, Honey, Take the Photo Now!) shows exactly how fine a line there is between the perversion some people choose to see, and the heartbreakingly beautiful memories of our babies growing up and eventually leaving home.

Even if Sting was in a dark place when he wrote the song, it doesn’t have to negate the beauty of the art.
