Ever Heard Of Ice Cream Cold? This Is How It Almost Killed Me
This could cause serious problems for you, as it did for me. Let’s see how…
If you have never heard about brain freeze, let me tell you that it is a type of headache. Other common names of this problem are ice cream headache, sphenopalatine ganglion-neuralgia, and cold stimulus headache. This short-term headache is primarily linked to the rapid consumption of ice pops, cold drinks, and ice cream. It means if you consume your ice cream at a fast speed or drink your beverage without taking a breath, you are likely to suffer from brain freeze.
How I Was Caught?
The complication started when I ate something extremely cold. It touched the roof of my mouth, a part we often call the upper palate. I am one of those people who love having cold drinks and ice creams in summer; this is why my chances of developing brain freeze are always high.
When the weather is hot, you and your family should not consume something cold too fast. This is because the entire digestive system, blood circulatory system, and nervous system are likely to be impacted. I had been through tough times, which is why I am requesting you to avoid too cold items every season.
The Various Types Of Headache You Should Be Familiar With
There are different forms or types of headaches, such as pain caused due to brain injuries and migraine-related ones. Please remember that this is not just ice cream or cold drink that causes ice cream headache; any cold stimulus can lead you to suffer from nerve pain.
What Happened To My Brain?
Basically, rapid changes took place in my brain that caused the disease. To give you a better idea, let’s suppose that you are eating ice cream, drinking a cold beverage, or consuming something really cold; the capillaries of your sinuses will get cold due to a cold stimulus. This will result in vasoconstriction (narrowing of the blood vessels). The very next moment or within a few seconds, a warm stimulus like the air will cause re-warming. This can result in vasodilation (widening of the blood vessels). These kinds of changes close to the sensitive nerves in the palate are the main reason for brain freeze.
How To Treat It?
You would be glad to know that I am fine now and that the sensation is never too serious. However, it can be quite unpleasant. A person who has brain freeze may feel restless for a few minutes or hours. I also had many sleepless nights. The doctor then began diagnosing the illness and suggested a couple of things.
- Cover the nose and mouth with one or both hands and breath at a fast speed in order to increase the flow of warm air to the palate.
- Drink warm water or hot milk.
- Push the tongue to the roof of the mouth; this helps warm the area.
- The preventive cure is decreasing the cold stimuli on the palate; this means the person who has ice cream cold should completely stop consuming too cold food and should not drink so many cold drinks at a time.
