Euphoria Street

Walking through paradise

She walked leisurely down the sidewalk looking at everything there was to see. She was walking through a neighborhood in decay. The storefronts were in disrepair and around half of them were vacant. Many windows were boarded up, graffiti adorned most buildings and the gutters were filled with litter. Most of the trees along the street were dead.

“This is paradise,” she said to herself. “This is paradise. This is paradise.” (She always said things in threes.)

Stopping, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath, “I drink in the beauty. I drink in the beauty. I drink in the beauty.”

She opened her eyes to see an incredible transformation. The neighborhood was now vibrant with life and color. The buildings were all in pristine condition, freshly painted. The graffiti was gone. Every storefront was full and open for business and there were shoppers everywhere. And everyone was happy and smiling as they greeted each other. There was no trash anywhere. All the trees were fully green and filled with happily singing birds.

A wave of euphoria washed over her as she looked around taking in the beauty all around her.

She walked for a while then stopped again. Closing her eyes she said to herself, “The world is a mess. The world is a mess. The world is a mess.”

Opening her eyes she was startled to see that everything had returned to the way things were before. Storefronts were boarded up, the graffiti was back, trash was everywhere, the few people on the street were walking with their eyes cast downward. And the birds were gone.

“Yuck! I don’t want this,” she said aloud (only once).

She closed her eyes once again and took an extra deep breath, “This is paradise! This is paradise! This is paradise!”

Very slowly, she opened her eyes. To her utter delight everything was beautiful and clean and vibrant again. The people were back, all with heads held high. The stores were open again, the graffiti was gone again as was the trash and the trees were once again alive. And the birds were back!”

Another wave of euphoria washed over her as she continued walking, drinking in all the beauty. She was so happy.

She thought to herself, “Man, I need to go for a walk more often.”
