Abstract

The poem "Essence of Family" delves into the author, Tina L. Smith's, reflections on the intangible yet palpable remnants of family moments that permeate the home. Through vivid imagery, the poem describes the warmth and energy once filled by the family's presence, now manifesting as ghostly echoes of laughter, argument, and love. It touches on the range of emotions that resonate in a family's interactions, from teasing to encouragement, and from joy to reminiscence. These spirits seem to be summoned through memories, both real and embellished, while the fleeting essence of their visits is captured through messages that sustain the bond until the next reunion. The poem is accompanied by a photograph of an intimate domestic scene, attributing the visual inspiration to Masaaki Komori, captured on Unsplash, and concludes with an author's note that reveals Smith's dual roles as an administrator in medical research and as a creative partner in a commercial photography business.

Essence of Family

Lingering spirits

Photo by Masaaki Komori on Unsplash

She imagines the sheets are still warm from their bodies. Just as she feels their presence in the kitchen, the dining room, the living room floor.

They wafted in with noise and clutter. With laughter and doors slamming.

Their voices playing tones of derision, Taunting, Encouragement, Joy, Braggadocio, Sham confidence, Challenge, Reminiscence.

All the pitches of familial love.

Ghosts of yesterday are summoned With warm memories, both true and tinged.

Flashes of dreams are revealed and quickly tucked away again Lest they dissipate under prying eyes.

They slowly drift into the night And awaken to goodbyes.

Now only wisps of conversations linger, Essence, a poor proxy for flesh and bone.

Sweet messages prolong their presence. And hold her heart together

Until the next visitation.
