Enjoy More Peace & Happiness By Saying No
Boundary-setting ideas and scripts
The more you verbalize your boundaries and say no to things that don’t bring you joy, the easier it gets and the more peace you’ll enjoy.
Ever get invited to something and feel obliged to go? You get a wedding invitation from your third cousin, twice removed and it’s a 3-hour drive and requires you to purchase a new outfit, spend money on gas, book one night at a hotel, and buy a gift. Yet you still feel the need to go.
I’m hear to tell you that you CAN say no.
Some people are uncomfortable saying no and instead find themselves annoyed, with anxiety, and in financial distress about attending an event they’d rather not go to.
If you’re nervous about saying no or aren’t sure how to say no to your friend’s birthday party, your uncle’s second wedding, your cousin’s baby shower, or your holiday work event, the following scripts are for you.
Here are some starter responses for saying no to money- and event-related matters. Remember that “No thank you” is a complete sentence and you owe no one (except maybe in some cases your very close loved ones) any excuses or explanations.
“Unfortunately it doesn’t fit my budget this month but maybe next time.”
“I think I’ll pass this time but thank you for inviting me.”
“I haven’t reached my savings goals yet so I don’t think I can participate this time.”
“I’m sorry I can’t lend out any money right now.”
“Apologies but I can’t make it.”
“I’m saving for vacation right now so I have to politely decline.”
“I’m on a tight budget this year but maybe next year.”
“No thank you.”
It is possible to be kind and polite and also say no at the same time. Do not let anyone make you feel like you’re being rude by declining an invitation, especially when it requires you to spend money or potentially go into debt.
Your mental health and financial health are of utmost importance. If an event is important to you but you later feel uncomfortable, it is also fine to attend and then excuse yourself at any time — again, no explanations needed.
Take care of yourself always, and wishing you lots of HAPPINESS + WEALTH⭐!
