Enjoy Afternoon Tea
How to slow down life and savor it
“There is something in the nature of tea that leads us into a world of quiet contemplation of life.” ― Lin Yutang, The Importance of Living
Yesterday I slowed down to savor the flavors of my favorite pastime, afternoon tea. It was a glorious two hours of smiles, laughter, conversation, and delight.
When our server brought our tea selections, she said: Let it steep for around three minutes. I pondered this phrase later on that day. Often we hurry about our day. What if we let ourselves steep in the warmth of a blanket or savor a sip of tea, drinking in life?
Afternoon tea teaches us to slow down. After the tea brews, we slowly pour it through a strainer into the cup. The tea leaves and spices filtered out, just like the parts of life we wish to leave behind.
Each tiny morsel of a triangular sandwich tickles our tastebuds with delight. Flavors of curry, pickles, and cheese teach us to hone in our senses and explore the world.
Here, nobody rushes you or expects you to hurry along. Each course is served in due time, to linger upon at the moment. A currant scone appears before us, hot from the oven. It is lovingly spread with clotted cream and jam, and its ethereal nature slows time.
Next, fresh yeasted crumpets set the stage for warmth and delight. Lashes of butter seep down into the holes and lemon curd adds zing and pizazz to the plate. Let us take in life and allow it to seep deep into our souls. Each experience we have deepens the meaning of our days.
Each bite of soft, pillowy bread, toasted with love and care, brings you to another world. It is a place of understanding, knowing you are where you need to be at this moment. Taking tea transports you to a realm of inner knowing.
As the conversation flows, smiles and laughter abound all around you. It is a ceremony of joy, friendship, and love.
As the tea nears its ending, sweets appear on the table. Wrapped like little Christmas presents, they signal the time to say goodbye. Yet, it is not forever. The feelings brought on my afternoon tea will linger on in your heart.
It is a joy to find yourself lost in time, sipping tea. It slows down the minutes, and you can become aware of the happiness surrounding you.
