Energy News — Austria’s OMV Joins With Vienna Energy To Explore Geothermal Energy Developments
In an exciting news story for European energy transition and climate change action, Austria’s OMV and government-owned Wien Energie (Vienna Energy) have agreed to develop a joint venture called “deeep” to explore geothermal energy resources in the greater Vienna area.
The two companies are calling this a “heating transition” in reference to the way the energy resources will be used in the country’s energy transition plans. Through “deeep” OMV and Wien Energie intend to expand output of geothermal energy by 200 megawatts for up to 200,000 households in the capital of Vienna.
For example, this joint venture agreement has already allowed for a new research project located in the eastern Vienna Basin knowns as “GeoTief Wien.” Read all about this geothermal energy project in the link above.

Michael Strebl, Chairman of the Board of Wien Energie, noted that this joint venture between OMV and Wien Energie is one of the country’s key solutions for the energy transition and climate change crisis. Here’s what he said:
“No one can accomplish this task alone; it calls for new ways of working together. The joint venture between Wien Energie and OMV is unparalleled and serves as a prime example throughout Europe of how the heating transition can succeed in a city of millions. With this joint venture, we are also getting the long-term expansion of deep geothermal energy in Vienna off the ground.”
It will interesting to see how this joint venture plays out in the long-term scenarios over Europe’s energy transition committments, as well as the Net Zero pledge by many countries to cut down to zero-emissions by 2050 in a scenario called Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) 2050.
But, in the short-term, there’s the looming spectre of Russian energy supplies, which seem to be finding their way back into European markets regardless of US and EU sanctions for the war in Ukraine. This will continue to be the focal point of geopolitical shifts between the US, EU and Russia.
