Endless Stretch of Lazy Summer Days
Poem in response to a Lucy King writing prompt about my love/hate relationship with summer

Sunset splashes color,
Vermillion edges fading as I watch
Sky turn to charcoal,
Summer longings bittersweet
With every sunset marking its demise
In minutes lost.
I heave myself
From sun-drenched shores
Or quiet kayaks skimming low
On glassy lakes that ripple
With my passing,
Then settle, smooth,
Erasing my small wake;
Endless stretch of lazy summer days
An illusion.
