End the Curation Rat Race
Ordinary stories can too generate mind-boggling stats. Take a sneak peek from an insider’s perspective.
You need not be a whiz kid or some kind of genius to make people crazy over an idea. Sometimes the simplest of things does the magic.
The same hysteria applies to curation.
There is too much hue and cry over the topic. I am not saying it is a bad thing. Why would I say that? It is great! Nevertheless, in my humble opinion, it is not that big of a deal as it is painted to be. Further, it is not the only criteria for judging the content quality that writers on Medium are producing. The aim should be excellence not curation. Winning shots will come naturally as you go along the process.
Today, I want to tell you my side of the story.
A few months back, I wrote a story that was curated.
No doubt, it was well thought out and one of my personal favorites. Hence, it was an exciting moment for me. In fact, it was my first story till that point in time that was curated. Thus, I immediately decided to share my experience with my fellow writers.
It was late in the evening when I found out that my story was selected for further distribution. The timing couldn’t have been better. I was running behind my daily schedule of the 100-day writing challenge series that I had taken up. I needed something. The curation story was the perfect solution to pull me through.
Facts About My Non-Curated Story
I sat down preparing the draft. Minutes later, I came up with really simple content to talk about my curation experience.
It was a two-minute read containing a screenshot of the stats, a link to my story that got curated, and bits of information to help other writers.
It hardly took me 15 to 20 minutes to create the post from start to finish.
Perhaps Carl Louis or Usain Bolt did the writing for me that day. To me, the story wasn’t a masterpiece but maybe it was to the readers! Remember, the key ingredients to a successful story are information, entertainment, and storytelling. The post can do well if one or more areas are addressed.
This is the link to my uncurated story that I am talking about.
Take a look at what happened in the subsequent weeks and months.

You can see that I got good stats on the story that was not curated.
Plus, it tops all other 80+ stories that I have written so far. Yet, the big reads and reviews on this particular story started coming after a few months. Initially, the story did well. Subsequently, the stats collapsed. Then suddenly I noticed a spike one day that has been going on for weeks now.
Concluding Points
- The aim should be excellence, not curation. If you are good at your work, you will hit the mark sooner or later.
- Even if your post is not curated, your stats may still surprise you. Always remember, quality is better than quantity.
- Be patient, sometimes it takes a while to get things started. Thus, keep your fingers crossed and remain focused on improving your writing.
- Make sure to respond to every comment posted. Every little detail counts. You never know what may trigger your algorithms and give a spark to our sleeping stats, fan following, and monthly earnings.
