12 Life-Defining Quotes That All One Sentence Long
Inspired by Marcus Aurelius
I try not to imagine how the world would be if there were more leaders like Marcus Aurelius. But it’s hard not to.
When someone leads with such compassion, understanding, self-reflection, and life-altering insights, I wish for leaders to hold similar qualities today.
However, as the good man once said: “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
So that’s where I try and place my energy today and I trust that it has a small impact on the world.
This article is one of those small contributions.
Below are 12 life-defining quotes from Marcus Aurelius that are all one sentence long.
Enjoy.
1. “Whoever values peace of mind and the health of the soul will live the best of all possible lives.”
A peaceful mind and a soulful life are the most important things. They generate feelings of contentment, joy, and wonder, along with a meaningful and purposeful life.
Here are some of the ways I create peace of mind and live a soulful life:
- Practice breathwork
- Meditate
- Serve in ceremonial spaces
- Spend quality time in nature
- Nourish my relationships
2. “Dwell on the beauty of life. Watch the stars, and see yourself running with them.”
“… for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” — Genesis
I believe we all come from the same universal consciousness that brought the world to life. However, through our own lives, we experience it in a unique way.
Perhaps Alan Watts said it best:
“Through our eyes, the universe is perceiving itself. Through our ears, the universe is listening to its harmonies. We are the witnesses through which the universe becomes conscious of its glory, of its magnificence.”
3. “There is nowhere that a person can find a more peaceful and trouble-free retreat than in his own mind.”
Another way of saying this is:
“Very little is needed to make a happy life; it is all within yourself.” — Marcus Aurelius
4. “Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.”
Growing up, I was confused about how much I was told who I should be. There seemed little space for discovering it myself. Society had certain rules to abide by and school taught me a specific educational model.
For a long time, I believed this to be the only truth.
Then I left home and left school and I realised that there are millions of ways to live, learn, and love, and that I can choose which aligns most with my values.
It was an empowering moment and ever since then I have been forging my own path.
5. “The best revenge is not to be like your enemy.”
Some of my best teachers in life have been the worst people. They’ve taught me how not to be and this has inspired me to become who I am today.
When bad things happen, the best response is to not react in the same way you were treated. Instead, use it as a vehicle for change.
6. “How much more grievous are the consequences of anger than the causes of it.”
Buddha put it another way: “Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; you are the one who gets burned.”
7. “When you arise in the morning think of what a privilege it is to be alive, to think, to enjoy, to love…”
That seems like the perfect way to wake up to me.
“I wake up some mornings and sit and have my coffee and look out at my beautiful garden, and I go, ‘Remember how good this is. Because you can lose it.” — Jim Carrey
8. “It is not death that a man should fear, but he should fear never beginning to live.”
Growing up, I was afraid of death. But what I was actually afraid of was dying before I lived.
Then I went travelling, fell in love, witnessed the beauty of life, and connected with the great spirit. Now death doesn’t scare me anymore. Mostly because I believe it’s not the end but also because I have lived a wonderful life.
9. “Whenever you are about to find fault with someone, ask yourself the following question: What fault of mine most nearly resembles the one I am about to criticize?”
For everything that irks us in another is something unresolved in ourselves.
When I believe someone is being selfish, for example, chances are I secretly wish I could set stronger boundaries or ask for what I need in the same way.
When I believe someone is being judgemental, chances are I secretly judge that about myself too.
That’s why Carl Jung said: “Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”
10. “If it is not right do not do it; if it is not true do not say it.”
Sometimes it really is that simple.
11. “You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
There are two worlds — outside and inside. However, there’s only one we can control and that’s where true peace resides.
“Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.” — Leo Tolstoy
12. “Our life is what our thoughts make it.”
Others have said the same too:
- “What you think, you become. What you feel, you attract. What you imagine, you create.” — Buddha
- “What you are thinking about, you are becoming.” — Muhammed Ali
- “Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” — Lao Tzu
So Marcus Aurelius was in good company.
That’s why he felt confident in saying:
“The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts.”
