Empathy Is What We Need
Not sympathy; we don’t want anyone to feel sorry for us and our predicaments.

These days, we need to know people have been in our shoes and understand the pain we are going through. So if you haven’t, don’t bother with your unhelpful platitudes. You will not be thanked but, instead, admonished for not empathising based on your experience of previously being in the sufferer’s position.
Today’s poem was inspired by Tim Maudlin’s heartwarming story about empathy.
Empathy sympathy
Folks bridle at one
Welcome the other
No desire to be fixed
Two ears to listen
Murmurs emote, love
No belittled help fits
Provocative barbs
Enflame, irritate
Mistaken sympathy
Forms rifts and ravines
Splits opinions, sisters
Anger simmers and boils
Wreaks rents in respect.
Leaves parties divided
