Emergency: Beware of Spammers and Scammers on Medium.

Lately, I haven’t been as active as I wanted in commenting and replying. Yet, Scammers on Medium is a thing now in the comment section. Please help spread this awareness to our fellow readers and writers.

Yesterday, I was reading one of Cipher Max’s posts and saw a spammer but most likely a scammer. They were pretty aggressive by creating a clone account with the same profile image and name as Cipher. (I guess Medium is weak at this part)

I left a light reminder and went about my day.

Good thing I took a screenshot when I saw it, yesterday.

This one was pretty obvious to spot. Asking me to Join Stephenmoore for Chipher?

Yet, about 10 hours ago, I read a post from Ryan Canady that spammer/scammer are trying to reply to comments and pretending to be Ryan.

Writers who have lots of comments will most likely face this issue first. If they do scam a few here and there, then they will start targeting anyone like wildfire.

The tricky part is that I see they will wait for a reader to leave a comment and wait for the writer to leave a clap and not reply. That is when they jump in and pretend that they were the original writer. From the surface, you can not tell if there is more than 1 reply if you do not expand the reply section.

In the example below Ryan did not reply or reply yet but most likely clapped. The scammer is already targeting this reading.

(this is just an example of how the scammer can step in whenever the reader leaves the last comment and the writer only claps on it and does not reply further, which happens very very often)

Ryan Canady, this is becoming serious as I write. These 6 people already follow this fake account, which means the likelihood of being scammed is higher.

Just heard from Sam Krämer in the comment section that Carl Jeffers is having the same issue with these scammers.

Beware to follow the REAL one.

I know that this happens daily on big accounts, but since they are targeting trending accounts with lower follower, which many new account follow and interact with. Best to alert them just in case.

1/24 Update: The author does help you identify if it was the author that is replying you.

Thanks and Take Care.
