Embracing the Suck
Anyone Can Achieve Success on Medium With Hard Word
“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” — Henry Ford
Embracing the suck.
It’s a phrase that resonates deeply with me, echoing through the halls of my fire academy where I spent some of the most grueling yet formative months of my life.
In those moments, “suck” wasn’t just a word; it was a reality we faced daily — a reminder that the path to becoming a firefighter wasn’t paved with ease but with challenges that tested our resolve to the core.
I recall one particularly intense training session in which we were thrown into simulated fire scenarios designed to test our limits.
Flames licked at the walls, smoke clouded our vision, and the heat suffocated.
It was in those moments, when exhaustion threatened to overwhelm us that we truly learned the meaning of embracing the suck.
In my writing, I encounter obstacles that test my resolve and creativity. There are days when the words refuse to flow, doubts creep in, and the blank page seems daunting.
But just as I pushed through the academy's challenges, I persevered in my writing, drawing on the lessons of resilience and determination I had learned amidst the flames.
As we battled through the flames, hauling hoses and executing search and rescue drills, a sense of camaraderie bound us together — a shared understanding that we were in this together and had each other’s backs no matter what.
We found moments of solidarity and strength in the chaos, drawing on one another’s courage to keep pushing forward.
Writing on Medium has a similar effect. I have surrounded myself with great writers who encourage me and show me ways to improve my skills even when I feel defeated.
There is camaraderie between writers on Medium, and we are also in this together. Although we all write about different things in different ways, our voices are a written verse, and we write here to support and be supported.
Embracing the suck is not just about surviving the physical challenges; it is also about embracing the mental and emotional toll.
It takes long hours of training, sleepless nights studying, and constant pressure to perform well.
We must be persistent, knowing that every obstacle we face prepares us for the realities of the job ahead.
So here’s to the fire academy, where I learned that sometimes, the toughest challenges shape us the most.
And here’s to embracing the suck, not just for what we have done but who we are becoming, committed to facing life’s obstacles head-on and emerging stronger on the other side.
