Embracing Retirement-Grandkids are a Gift From Heaven
Volume 19-Grandchildren Are Your Reward For a Life Well Lived
Welcome back to my series on getting the most from retirement. As retirees, we certainly deserve to be able to enjoy this phase of our lives. I am now blessed to have a 4-year-old granddaughter and a grandson on the way. We have only known our granddaughter for a little over a year. What a blessing; she certainly adds another dimension to our lives.
As I have written in my previous articles in this series, keeping busy is one of the keys to enjoying retirement. Grandkids will fulfill this requirement and then some. They will bring joy to your life and help to take your mind off of your worries. Here’s to hoping that you have grandkids or are expecting some soon.
Of course, not all of us are lucky enough to have grandchildren. And I realize sometimes family situations may prevent you from seeing them for one reason or another. However, I would urge you to take full advantage of this wonderful opportunity for happiness if you are able to. Even if you don’t have your own grandkids, perhaps you can spend time with the children of a niece or nephew or grandkids of a good friend. The benefits will be well worth the effort.
Being retired gives you the time to be able to enjoy these little bundles of joy free of the stress we sometimes (actually often) felt while raising our own kids and working a full-time job. If you were a stay-at-home Mom or Dad, you were blessed, even though I realize this is not easy and a lot of hard work. As a grandparent, we usually don’t have the kids full-time, which makes a huge difference.
One of the greatest things about grandkids when they are young is that they are easily entertained with simple things, be it crafts, games, coloring, books, baking, exploring outside, gardening, shopping, hiking, fishing, watching TV, etc. There are so many things you can do with them. At the end of the day, you will be tired, a good tired. And I guarantee that you will have forgotten about some of your worries during the process.
Being grandparents also has brought a renewed sense of purpose to our lives, especially since we are watching our granddaughter two days a week most weeks during the summer. It gives us something to look forward to and it opens up a whole new world to us. Our son is now 29 and our daughter 36, so it has been a lot of years since they were 4. It is nice to be able to have this experience again. The circle of life.
I hope you enjoy my articles about embracing retirement. As I have said many times, we as retirees deserve to be able to enjoy this chapter of our lives. I hope my articles help you to do this.
