Embrace the Pace in Slow Tai O.
The sleepy fishing village of Tai O offers a welcome respite from hectic Hong Kong

Hong Kong has one of the most stunning skylines in the world. It’s a city of jam-packed superstructures. Impressive views aside, living in this concrete jungle does leave one craving serenity.
Enter tranquil Tai O, nestled between the ocean and mountains. It’s one of Hong Kong's oldest fishing villages. A picturesque setting of rickety homes sitting atop tall wooden stilts. The residents are a close-knit fishing community with long-standing traditions, like making shrimp paste.
Tai O is the hub for laid-back excursions. Scenic hiking trails crisscross the surrounding countryside. Small boat rides head out to sea, hoping to spot rare pink dolphins. My activity of choice is to wander the labyrinth of lanes, taking snapshots as I go.
Splashes of colour coat the village; my favourites are the wall murals and doorways transformed into paintings.

Narrow wooden bridges cross waterways dotted with boats and past tumbledown buildings.

Navigating the alleys is either by bike or by foot. Dinging bicycle bells let you know to get out of the way and smiling villagers greet you as they pass by.

Located on the west coast of Lantau Island, Tai O is an easy getaway from downtown Hong Kong. Convenient transport links are accessible via Tung Chung or Mui Wo. Crowds overrun this tiny village on weekends. Visit during the week for the best possible experience.
Finally, if you want to maximise your time here, consider the Tai O Heritage Hotel. This former police station is now a colonial-chic boutique hotel. Its quiet headland position would be a perfect base to explore and unwind.
