Summary

The website provides instructions on embedding mathematical equations on Medium using the Embed.fun service.

Abstract

The article titled "How to Embed Math Equations on Medium using Embed.fun" explains the challenge of displaying math equations elegantly on Medium and introduces Embed.fun as a solution. It describes the process of embedding both simple and complex math formulas into Medium articles by generating a link through Embed.fun, which can then be inserted into the Medium editor. The service uses KaTeX for formula rendering and supports a wide range of functions. The article also advises authors to save their formula links, as Embed.fun does not offer user accounts, and suggests forking existing formulas for new creations. Additionally, the article promotes ZAI.chat, an AI service alternative to ChatGPT Plus, offering similar capabilities at a lower cost.

Opinions

  • The author acknowledges the utility of math formulas in explaining complex concepts.
  • The author believes that Embed.fun makes math formulas look "sleek" on Medium, suggesting a positive aesthetic assessment of the service.
  • There is an opinion that Embed.fun, despite not being the most elegant solution, is effective and straightforward for embedding math equations.
  • The author recommends checking the supported functions provided by KaTeX, implying confidence in the service's capabilities to handle various mathematical expressions.
  • The article suggests that the inability to change a formula once published is a limitation of the service, emphasizing the importance of saving formula links.
  • The author endorses ZAI.chat as a cost-effective alternative to ChatGPT Plus, indicating a preference for value for money.

Math formulas can be extremely useful tools for explaining difficult concepts. While some people might cringe at the sight of them, algorithms are the key to simplifying the world (a topic for another day!).

Unfortunately, making math look nice on Medium.com is difficult.

And — to be fair — making math look nice on any website is difficult.

Luckily a site called Embed.fun has a great app for making any math formula look sleek.

Here’s a couple of simple formulas embedded using Embed.fun:

Not too shabby, huh?

You can also make more complex formulas too

I’d recommend checking out their supported functions, but I don’t think there’s a single type of formula you wouldn’t be able to embed.

It’s not the most elegant solution (you can only search for parts of the formula in-text) but it works!

It’s also super simple.

Instructions

  • Go to embed.fun
  • Enter your math formula using the supported functions
  • Publish the formula to get a link
  • Put the link on an empty line in your Medium post and hit Enter.

The formula should show up automatically.

If it doesn’t…

  • an empty editor line gives you a “+” button on the left-hand side of the line.
  • Click on the “+”, then click on the “<>” embed button.
  • Paste the embed.fun link to embed the formula into the article.

The embedded formula should now show up in your editor.

There’s no way to change a formula once it’s been published

There’s no way to sign up for an account on embed.fun, so make sure you save the link to your formula somewhere safe so you can refer back to it when you need to and post it on other Medium articles or elsewhere on the internet.

You can also “fork” a formula if it already has most of the elements of what you need for a new formula. This makes a new link that you can edit and then publish as a new formula.
