Elon Musk Wants To Make Changes to Twitter. Here’s What You Should Expect From Elon’s Twitter
Elon will be Elon

The bird is freed.
These were the words Elon Musk tweeted on the 27th of October to herald his purchase of Twitter.
If you’ve been following the Elon vs Twitter drama, I’m sure you’d be all caught up on the details. But if you are wondering what the hell I mean by Elon vs Twitter drama, let me bring you up to speed a bit. I’ll try not to make you dizzy.
Elon Musk started buying Twitter stocks in January 2022. He bought a lot of shares and became the highest shareholder. As the highest single shareholder he was invited by Twitter to join the board of directors, an invitation he accepted but later declined. In April, he made an offer to buy Twitter for $44 billion, at $54.20 per share.
After Twitter accepted his offer, Elon spent the next few months trying to get out of the deal for many reasons, including maybe buyer’s remorse. Twitter took him to court to enforce the deal, and when the judge gave him an ultimatum; buy Twitter or go to trial, he realized going to trial is more trouble than it was worth. He completed the purchase of Twitter for $44 billion on 27th October 2022.
Now that we’ve got this history lesson out of the way, what should we expect Elon’s Twitter to look like?
Luckily, Elon himself has given us some clues. First on the list, he wants people to pay for the blue verified badge.

Which makes you wonder. The purpose of the blue tick is to differentiate between real public figures and parody accounts or imitations. It’s quite like Twitter’s stamp of legitimacy. If every Tom, Dick, and Harry can buy a blue tick, doesn’t that defeat the aim?
Remember Vine? The app where you could make 6-second videos, edit them on the fly, and share them on Twitter? It was acquired by Twitter and made a lot of people super famous, but it was later shut down after intense competition from rivals — just think Snapchat. Elon has hinted at bringing back Vine. Why not? The best thing we need now is another app for recording and sharing videos.

In the few days following Musk’s purchase of the 396.5 million user-strong platform, a lot of racist tweets and conspiracy theories reappeared on Twitter. Twitter is heavily policed for hate speech, anti-LGBTQI, conspiracy theories, and other far-right tweets. It appears that with Elon in charge now, far-right figures are testing the waters to see if the old rules still hold true. If you’ve been on Twitter long enough, you’d remember that it used to have a lot of bullies and was filled with a lot of Hitler-loving conspiracy theory peddlers. Not that we can’t learn any lessons from Hitler. In fact, I wrote an article listing a lot of positive lessons that we can learn from Hitler. You can check the article out here;
But considering the history of Twitter and how it has been relatively cleaned up, you can’t blame people for being worried about going back to the old Twitter that was full of bullies and guys with swastikas. The question now is; will Elon Musk relax the rules?
As a sign of things to come in terms of content moderation, Elon has promised to form a content moderation council to review accounts that were banned, before deciding if to reinstate them or not.

Does this mean we’d see Donald Trump and Jordan Peterson back on the platform soon? Well, I certainly hope so. But hopefully not the other swastika guys though.
As with everything about Elon Musk, we’d just have to grab a cup of coffee, sit back, and watch it all unfold. Elon Musk a „letter to advertisers”, highlighting that he bought the platform because he wants to change the world

Hopefully, this means he realizes how much power platforms like Twitter have in shaping public conversations and fomenting and spreading public opinions. You just have to look at January 6th, 2021 for confirmation of this. So while I’m sipping my coffee and watching this all unfold, I hope that Elon does the right thing for Twitter, democracy, and for the world. That’s a lot of weight to put on one man’s shoulders but it’s Elon, he can handle it.
Oh, and did I mention that Elon appointed himself the new Chief Executive Officer of Twitter?
