Elon Musk Dances Again
New Giga Berlin Factory prompts Elon to break out his dance moves!

Elon Musk unveiled Tesla’s first manufacturing site in Europe on Tuesday, aiming to relieve strain on the company’s other operations in the United States and China. At Tesla’s 5 billion euro ($5.5 billion) plant, Musk was pictured dancing as he presided over the delivery of the company’s first German-made automobiles to 30 clients and their families. According to Reuters, Musk added, “This is a terrific day for the factory,” before praising the launch as “another step in the direction of a sustainable future.” The Tesla CEO reminisced about the company’s Shanghai factory opening in January 2020, where he also demonstrated some dance moves. Musk is expected to cut the ribbon at the new Giga Berlin (or Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg) factory in Grünheide, a coal town in Brandenburg, Germany, just outside of Berlin. Giga Berlin is not without its detractors. According to Reuters, several protestors gathered outside the facility on Tuesday to voice their concerns. They are concerned that the plant would consume too much water, and they are dissatisfied with the quantity of trees that have been cut down to make it possible.
Demand is high.
Tesla expects the Berlin factory to produce up to 500,000 cars per year. According to the German journal Auto Motor Und Sport, the Tesla plant plans to produce 2,000 automobiles in its first few weeks of serial production. According to Troy Teslike, an independent Tesla researcher, the company expects vehicle output to reach 1,000 per week six weeks after commercial production begins, and 5,000 per week by the end of 2022.
The electric vehicle manufacturer in the United States has been failing to meet up with demand, and there are reportedly long wait times for Model Ys and certain Model 3s in other regions of the world. Due to a resurgence of Covid-19 instances in China, Tesla had to temporarily stop down production at its Shanghai facility last week. For at least two days, production of Model 3 and Model Y automobiles built in China was halted. Tesla has begun exporting cars from China to consumers in Europe in recent quarters. The demand for electric vehicles remains high in Europe, and Tesla can now rely on some production on the continent rather than relying primarily on shipments from China.
Giga Berlin has been in the works for several years. It’s critical to Tesla’s global expansion plans after the opening of its Gigafactory 3 plant in Shanghai in late 2019. Tesla has also recently begun manufacture of the Model Y at a new plant in Austin, Texas, but the company has yet to conduct a grand opening for the facility. Musk praised German engineering when he announced intentions to build a car manufacturing in Germany in November 2019. He stated, “ “Everyone recognizes that German engineering is unrivaled. That is one of the reasons we chose Germany as the location for our Gigafactory Europe. We’ll also establish an engineering and design center in Berlin, which is home to some of the world’s best art.”
Tesla received conditional approval from German authorities to begin production on March 4th. After months of delays, the conditional license for the vehicle and battery factories in Brandenburg was finally granted. Tesla had hoped to begin vehicle production in the early summer of 2021, but the Covid epidemic, supply chain issues, and battles with environmentalists all hampered the company’s development.
Is your factory thirsty?
While the plant is up and running, the facility’s water usage continues to be a concern. In a research note released Monday, Deutsche Banke cars sector analysts wrote, “The influence on the local water supply continues to be a risk for the plant’s survival.” In order to truly ramp up production, Tesla will need to show evidence of appropriate water usage and air pollution control, they noted.
