Thoughts on Initiative

Once in a while, I hear someone say, “I’d like to do this, but I can’t due to XYZ”. I’m guilty of it sometimes, too.

How many times do we claim we want to do something and just never find the motivation to do it? How often are our claims lies? How often are the excuses just laziness for not wanting to get off our phones, wake up early, leave the house sooner, or any other thing we’d rather do?

There’s a saying in Spanish, “El Interes Tiene Pies”. Literally translated, it means “interest has feet”. Figuratively, it means “if you’re interested then you’ll go after it”.

If you really, really want that job, you’re going to apply and prepare. If you really want to write that book, you’ll make time to work on it. If you really want to have a thriving garden, you’ll make time to tend to it daily. If you really want to succeed, you’ll take steps to learn, grow, and accomplish steps along the way.

I hope to finish my book, but I know that sometimes I zone out on Facebook or watch a series (albeit with my kids which means quality time with them). But if I really want it, I need to carve out time to write every day or at least several times per week.

There are a few things on my list that I’d love to do. Some I find time to complete, and some are put on the back burner. But at the end of the day, if something is truly a top priority on my list of things I want to do, I’ll find time to work towards it.

What about you? Does your “interest have feet”?
