El Día de los Reyes Magos

A Day to Receive Gifts for Bambini, Niños, Nens, Enfants, Crianças…

I took the photo above today in a little vegan shop where I stopped to have a piece of focaccia.

I didn’t celebrate the holiday this year, but it warmed my heart to see the cake, so I decided to write a bit about this special day for all my friends who may not be familiar with the day of the three kings.

While some children may write their Christmas wish list to Papa Noel, others (or sometimes the same children, if they are really lucky) write theirs to either Melchor, Gaspar, or Baltasar, one of the three kings of the biblical Christmas story.

The Catholic feast day of the three kings is celebrated in many countries, and it usually includes things like a festive parade, opening gifts, and eating a cake shaped into a ring.

There may even be a surprise or two in the cake, and different cultures use different items with different meanings.

Some children pick a favorite king and write their letters to the same one every year.

Some may not write a letter at all but still receive one or more gifts on this day, which is the 6th of January.

There are many different holidays and traditions around this time of year, and children all over the Mediterranean and beyond often get to partake in at least one of them, even if their family is not religious.

Like most holidays all around the world, it is a time to take a break, be with family, eat tasty food, receive, and even give gifts to loved ones.

It can be a magical time.

I hope you enjoyed learning about this holiday or being reminded of it. I would love to read about your holiday traditions in the comments below! If you enjoy this type of story, you may like to follow me, as I love to write about life from a Mediterranean perspective.
