Eight Times Zero Is Still Zero

Trying to find a way

Years ago, I was in the office of a client to whom I sold advertising in my boss’s publication. He was happy with the results from our paper but complained about another salesman who’d hyped him on getting ads in 8 papers for the price of one. Foolishly, he’d gone for the pitch and criticized himself for that decision: “Eight times zero is still zero.” I got where he was coming from.

Today, I received a notification from our favorite blogging platform which congratulated me on becoming a top writer in culture. My heart did not skip a beat. I’ve received similar accolades before. I think at this point I’m a top writer in 5 topics. Which reminds me of my old client. Five times zero still equals zero.

It might sound like I’m complaining about medium. But that’s not it at all. They’re trying to help me — not mock me. It just isn’t working. You’d think that with my posting on Many Stories, Twitter, Linkedin, and joining Facebook groups, I’d be up to my ass in views. Guess again. Ten times zero still equals zero.

I must have read 50 articles on how to garner your audience on medium and took all the advice into consideration. Guess how that went! Fifty times zero equals zero.

I explained the problem to a friend in a nutshell. “I knew half the world wanted to be rock stars. I didn’t realize that the other half wants to be writers!” And therein lies the problem. Just too many mouths to feed.

Pretty much everybody who pays the $5 monthly fee on this platform is also a wannabe writer. And that’s a lot of writers! Writing well and meaningfully is a snap compared to figuring out how to get anybody to read your shit.

But I shouldn't complain. I’ve earned slightly over $100 for two months running. And in December, I’m on a course to make $150 (if all holds). That would probably put me in the top 5%.

Small compensation for the small compensation. I know. Ninety-five percent of people here probably think I should count my blessings. But I’m too busy trying to figure this thing out to waste my time with all that.

I learned how to write a long time ago. Now it’s this social media deal that’s killing me. Better to be a social media maven than a good writer is the message that’s coming through loud and clear.

Better end this now. It’s time to tweet. At least, you don’t have to know how to write to do that!
