Eight-Legged

#6 of 31 Days Of May- SCBWI Challenge

Photo by Masaaki Komori on Unsplash

Heavy load a sure sign

Something is on the line

Snag or catch

Do we detach?

Winding for an hour

Water hard to scour

Darkness of the night

Taking away full sight

Splashing heard

A visiting bird

Splosh on the jetty

Fisherman sweaty

A bunch of us scream

What a clueless team

How to unhook

With no handbook

Tentacles seeking escape

Form changing shape

A boy quarter of our age

Takes over centre stage

Offers experienced advice

Actions required not so nice

Our decision is to release

An attempt to restore peace

BUT…We are too late

For our eight legged mate

Far more clever than us

Made use of all the fuss

The last limb just in sight

Waving us all a goodnight

A recount of a holiday moment I had with a bunch of mates. We had been fishing many times before, but had never encountered an octopus on our lines.

Adding to the action of the scene, earlier that day, one of our mates declared her secret cringe factor for big spoons.

Wtf.. was the rest of our thoughts as we laughed our arses off at her…you know the kind of laugh and jokes you can have with a close friend because they are like your sister/brother?

The jetty scene included a random visit by someone out walking with a massive spoon. My guess was she was using it to help with her flash for night photography but it made for a shit tonne of laughter.

A story that gets mentioned years later…a spoon charm part of her gift for her 40th last year.

By the way…I was very happy we had flattened the barbs on our hooks so the occie had an easier escape. I reflect and think, geez, it fought for over an hour to escape. A well deserved victory to the octopus.

The moment has given me a conflict of thought when catch and release discussions have come up since.

“Eight-Legged” – today’s prompt from the 31 days of May challenge being run by SCBWI West (Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators) …if anybody feels like participating, join in as you please.

Special thanks to Christine for playing along with me. Loved this read from her latest.
