Educators Now — Making a Lasting Impact in The Metro Atlanta Area

For the past 3 months, I’ve had the pleasure of working with a company based in Atlanta called Educators Now LLC. If you are a teacher or an individual with gaps in your resume I highly encourage you to work with Educators Now. E.N provides educators with the opportunity to work with a range of schools in the Metro Atlanta area and beyond. I specifically joined because I appreciated their flexibility, professionalism, and supportive staff. As a contractor, you are able to choose your availability picking from a range of assignments. I specifically appreciated this feature and perk because as an entrepreneur it gave me the opportunity to focus more on my business while also supporting a growing provider that works to enhance and aid our schools. I was deeply humbled by the fact that they encouraged educator placements in underserved grade schools and childcare programs. I couldn’t help but value the dedication of staff members such as Natalie and Lutania to provide exceptional service regardless of where the schools and or programs were based.
“When one teaches, two learn.” –Robert Heinlein
This quote by Heinlein reminds me of my day-to-day work as an educator. In the classroom teacher and student become one in a synergy of exchanged knowledge. Every day is a day to learn something new for me. I recall assisting children ranging in age from infants to grade-schoolers. One of my favorite experiences was seeing how intuitive the 4 year-olds in my room were. They were very vocal about their likes and dislikes, they had clear boundaries when someone treated them in a way that they felt was wrong, and they were quick to express their feelings at times very passionately. I’d often hear them say “ Ms.Haji… Ms.Haji he/she hit me” with expressions of mild irritation that said they were plotting on ways to get even without getting in trouble or being seen. I’ve seen very clever attempts thus far. It makes you appreciate their sense of humor!
Positive Redirection
Children as I’ve mentioned before can be highly intuitive. At times I can’t help but see their frustration when they feel like they’re not heard. I make it a point to listen intentionally. Today during lunch one of my kids noted that he didn’t want to drink milk, that instead, he’d like some water. This came out of course… in a way that gave me a chance to redirect in a positive manner. I’m big on respect which I believe is an essential part of our society. Respect is a two-way street. I politely asked him “ Harlem, How do we ask for water nicely?” to which he responded in the warmest voice “May I have some water please”.I was so proud and appreciated how quickly he was able to catch on. At times it may not be as simple as that but I noted how repetition helps exponentially with positive redirection. I also realized that doing this while taking the time to listen also shows their peers what is acceptable in a learning setting! I was pleasantly surprised to see his peers follow suit when it came to asking politely.
Respect Educators
Ask ‘How will they learn best?’ not ‘Can they learn?’ — Jaime Escalante
I recall when I was first introduced to the schooling system in America; I felt as though I was behind in my education. I began schooling at the age of 6 in a new continent, language, and system I was not familiar with. At times I felt as though I wasn’t heard or listened to. The teachers that I am grateful for and remember clearly are those who took the time to teach me according to how I learned best. The quote above is something I aim to exemplify in and even outside of the classroom.
How can I serve as the bridge to helping someone understand what I’m saying?
Being placed in a teaching role gave me invaluable experience, one that has made me reflect on every single one of my educators from elementary to college. I have so much respect for teachers, especially the ones who go above and beyond to serve and meet the needs of their students on a day-to-day basis.
