Editors at Medium Used to Call Li’l’ Scooter the “Story Grenade”

’cause he used to go off in so many directions

I remember he used to sit at his little writing desk with his crayon and a piece of scrap paper.

He would be brainstorming for topics for his column.

Then, at some point, he would start shaking like Tom Terrific’s thinking cap, and my mom would say, “He’s fixin’ to blow!” His crayon would suddenly become so busy it would start to melt.

And the story itself would be about almost anything from warthogs in the wilderness to the problems with preschool.

But after a couple of months in preschool, most of them spent in a corner, he discovered minimalism, a practice where he dealt with fewer toys, fewer friends, and fewer playground visits. His tiny theory of “less is more” was born.

His writing began to concentrate on more of a niche than on the entire universe of thought coming from his overactive brain.

“Do one thing and do it pretty good, then do something else,” became his motto.

Editors at Medium began to relax and sit back more comfortably in their chairs. The Niche Brothers had arrived.
