Echoes Of You

A long goodbye

Image by Anja Bauermann on Unsplash

The sound of the front door closing brings with it relief and pain in equal measure, it’s the sound of you leaving, something I’m slowly growing used to.

Who knew that that the initial break can take years to shatter your hope, as you scramble to hold the fragile pieces together, but tears don’t make strong enough glue.

Whispered promised seem to echo long after angry words, I’m still waiting for the wind to stop returning your name to me.

Memories haunt me, your presence entangled with every moment I treasure, there’s no clean way to cut you out.

All this I hold in my smiled greetings and polite words, eyes aching to look into yours and see some glimmer of the person I knew. A person who left years ago but whose shadow remains in my life.

Written in response to Casey Lawrence’s Moody Monday prompt which you can find below.
