Echo Chamber

A Poem

Photo by Sharon McCutcheon on Unsplash

Let me speak my mind into this chamber of similarity so I can hear what I say Echo

I say what you say and you say what I say and we say what we say Others don’t matter Echo

To allow divergent views is to bully our purpose We know what we know and we like it this way Echo

The sound is so beautiful The reverberations of this group thought all in agreement in principle Echo

But what if this chamber breaks? And we are forced to consider outside points of view Amplification lost Quiet

What does it sound like when there is no echo? When you don’t parrot me and I don’t mimic you Openness

I need the reinforcement for my long-held beliefs because without that I must consider more Echo?

Let me speak my mind into this chamber and let it say back to me what I said Echo

Let me hide from the world and pretend I am unaware that other views persist Let me continue to resist Echo

Please don’t break this fragile chamber built on collective voices Holding us together Echo

But sometimes hearing the same thing over and over again Becomes untoward and I can’t listen to all of us robots repeating the same lines without ever thinking for ourselves Echo!

The only thing I need is a small opening to diverse thought and understanding to release me from this constant clanging of agreement No More Echo
