Easy Home Recipe: Apple and Blueberry Crumble

Quick and Easy Baking with Kids!

This recipe is very easy to make with your kids. It doesn’t take long, so younger children shouldn’t get bored!

It’s a good way for children to practice using potato peelers and for older children to practice cutting up apples safely.

This is quite a healthy dessert because it contains two different types of fruit, including blueberries, which are very good for you.

I always keep the use of sugar to a minimum, but you could reduce it further or use a sugar substitute if you like.

My son and I made this recipe together on Sunday and we all enjoyed eating it with a dollop of custard on top!

Ingredients

6 large cooking apples or golden delicious applies

5 oz (150 g) blueberries

6 oz (170 g) plain flour

3 oz (75 g) butter or block margarine

3 oz (75 g) sugar, plus 1 tablespoon of sugar to add to the apples while cooking

1 oz (25 g) rolled oats (optional)

Method

1. Peel the apples using a potato peeler.

2. Cut the apples into large chunks and throw away the cores.

3. Put the apple chunks into a pan. Sprinkle over 1 tablespoon of sugar and add 1 tablespoon of water.

4. Cook the apples over a fairly low heat for around 10 minutes, until they are starting to go soft and a little mushy. Stir them frequently to stop them from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Add a little more water if necessary.

5. Place the apples in a pie dish and leave them to cool for about 5 minutes.

6. Wash the blueberries and mix them into the apples.

7. Sieve the flour into a mixing bowl.

8. Cut the butter or margarine into small cubes and add to the flour.

9. Rub the butter or margarine into the flour. Use only your fingertips (not the palms of your hand) and lift the mixture up as high as the rim of the bowl to get as much air into the mixture as possible. Watch this video for a demonstration on how to rub butter into flour.

10. Once the mixture looks like breadcrumbs, stir in the sugar and the oats, if using.

11. Sprinkle the mixture over the apples and blueberries in the pie dish.

12. Bake in the oven at 350F, 180C or gas mark 4 for 15–20 minutes until it is golden brown.
