Easy Availability of Pornography as a Factor Contributing to Incidences of Crime against Children

Easy availability of pornography has been identified as one of the factors contributing to instances of crimes, against children according to a statement made in Parliament.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail in response to a written question from Syerleena Abdul Rashid (PH Bukit Bendera) stated that police investigations have revealed factors such as the presence of easily accessible social media platforms, including those accessed by children.
These platforms often serve as avenues where victims come into contact with perpetrators and subsequently fall victim to harassment.
The Minister further highlighted that addiction to pornography can lead individuals to experiment with and eventually engage in offenses.
In addition breakdowns in family structures have also been identified as contributing factors leading some individuals to engage in relationships and other forms of violence due, to lack of supervision and seeking personal gratification.
According to Saifuddin there have been, around 5,369 reported cases of crimes against children across the country from 2018 to 2022.
When the statistics are broken down by age, it becomes clear that, with 2,026 cases, the greatest proportion of victims are between the ages of 13 and 15.
On the hand the lowest number of cases is reported among children aged six and below comprising a total of 405 incidents “ he stated.
During this time frame 4,508 cases involved girls while boys were affected in around 861 instances “ revealed Saifuddin Nasution.
Regarding the relationship between suspects and victims in these reported cases there were a total of 5,394 suspects involved. It’s important to note that some cases had than one suspect “ shared the Home Minister.
Among all these cases with known relationships between suspects and victims those involving acquaintances accounted for the number at 1,151 incidents “ added Saifuddin Nasution.
Additionally disclosed was that between 2018 and 2022 a total of 5,460 individuals were identified as offenders or suspects, in sexual crime investigations conducted under the Child Sexual Offenses Act (Act 792).
