EarthBound: The Novel
Part 1: The Gods’ Tale
Eli’a sat quietly in the darkness with his legs crossed. His shoulders rose as he took a deep breath, exhaling heavily through his mouth. His breath materialized as a flash of fire before rapidly cooling into black smoke. The cold of space was nothing to his body. He was the Sun, and each beat of his heart pushed heat into the void around him, warming it to a bearable degree for his one and only companion, Chandra.
Eli’a took another heavy breath and watched as Chandra danced in the distance. Chandra caught him staring and smiled at him, her face peeking out through the cloud of her voluminous, white hair. She contrasted him, and together they made a perfect binary. Eli’a was strong, and immobile, while she was buoyant and flexible. If she were close, Eli’a would dwarf her even while sitting. The moon goddess spiraled as she bounced and danced, making her hair and thin, veiled dress swim after her. Motes of light shimmered around her while a glow of orange-gold hung over Eli’a’s pitch-black skin. The blemishes on Chandra’s body were invisible from a distance, but up close one could see the dark scars on her caramel body. Although the scars were small, they were numerous, causing Chandra to feel ugly.
“Why don’t you join me instead of watching?” Chandra asked.
Eli’a’s muscles flexed as he shifted his body. “I do not dance, Chandra. It’s a difference we have.”
“In all my years I’ve never even seen you try.” “
It’s not in me. If it were, I would’ve done it.”
Chandra sighed and continued to dance on her own. Eli’a heard no music, but he could tell from watching that there was a tune in her ears. The void around them was a mystery to them both. Eli’a stood and sometimes paced back and forth, pushing it away with his presence, but it would always fill up the space he had left behind. Though Chandra lacked power, she made up for it with courage. She ventured out further than Eli’a ever did, jumping and dancing to keep the dark away with her rays of moonlight. If it weren’t for the Earth in her care, Eli’a believed she would be a comet rather than a moon.
Chandra twirled on her heel until she stood next to him, resting a hand on his shoulder. “Eli’a, dance with me.”
“Why?”
“Because why not?” Chandra exclaimed. She pressed on him lightly. “You do nothing else. You’re serious and brooding. You never express yourself. You never do anything for fun. I know you want to.”
Eli’a removed her hand from him and looked past her. “There’s not much else I want besides your company. And theirs.”
Chandra followed his gaze to the Earth, She sighed and sat in his lap. “They’re yours too, Eli’a.”
“What have they shown you?”
Chandra pressed her body against his and rested her head on his shoulder. She sat on his lap. “They’ve shown me how to make a fleeting life brilliant. They’ve beaten time, Eli’a. I want what they have for us.”
“What is it?”
Chandra stood and held his hand. “I can’t explain it. You just have to see.”
Eli’a shook his head. “I can’t, Chandra.”
“You can. You will. You won’t hurt them I promise.”
Chandra held out a hand, and the Earth floated towards her, nestling itself in her palm. Light shimmered around it, and Chandra gave Eli’a a nod before handing it off to him. He took it gently. The planet had seemed small in Chandra’s hands, but it had grown in his own, as if to accommodate him.
“Don’t just stare. Listen.” Chandra urged, pushing his hands closer to his face.
Eli’a’s breath shuddered with anxiety, something he’d never felt before. His heart hammered as he lifted the Earth to his ear. At first there was silence, but slowly sounds came. Rushing water, whistling wind, the thunderous roar of a stampede. A smile broke through the grim mask of his face as he heard a wolf howl and birds chirp.
“I hear them, Chandra. I hear-.”
Chandra shushed him. “Quiet. There’s more.”
Eli’a waited, and a moment passed. A soft voice spoke, followed by a baby’s hungry cry, then more voices. Eli’a laughed and rubbed his face. The back of his hand glistened with tears. He hadn’t even realized he was crying.
“Is that them?”
Chandra nodded and placed her hands on the Earth. “They’ve known us since the beginning. It was about time you met them.”
