Have you ever dreamed about having one of your stories doing well?

Wouldn’t it be nice if, just once, your content went viral and you woke up stunned at the success of your own creative efforts?

It’s nice to dream.

I’m not here to tell you any magic secrets to super success. Honestly, half the time I couldn’t tell you which idea of mine is going to work and which one is better left on the bottom of the scrap paper pile.

The best advice I could give any writer is just have fun and write when you feel inspired to write. Try to have a good time and everything else will take care of itself.

Your Big Power Moves

Okay, if I were a spy in a foreign land, and if I got captured, then maybe I could give a few hints about writing success.

But first there would have to be a burn notice on me, like on the television show, and my options would be limited because everybody would disown me.

With nobody to rely on for help, I would have to use my wits to survive. Sure, I would have to cooperate in the interrogation room, and don’t hold it against me. After all, you live to fight another day, right?

If you were forced to create content, and that story must get some record-breaking views or else, I guess there would be some things you could do. Granted, spectacular content alone is no guarantee of success.

You could try these ideas:

  1. Your embarrassing times. Hey, I’ve had more of these than I care to recall and I certainly don’t want to talk about them. I’ve been trying to purge them from my brain for the better part of twenty years. For example, during the time of my first restaurant job, I spilled things onto the laps or tables of way too many customers and I apologized profusely every time. Now when this same thing happens to me at a dining place, you can bet your bottom dollar that I am patient and very understanding about it. I know what it is like to be in that situation.
  2. Funniest moments. People love a good laugh or funny story every now and again. One time I went to an emergency hospital visit and I had on two completely different shoes. “How could you not notice that?" somebody asked, but I didn’t have a good answer. It just happened. But you know what? It didn’t even matter one bit.
  3. Biggest financial lesson. Goodness, I don’t even want to go there, but let’s call it a lesson and not a mistake. Let’s see, I remember where I was sitting when Google went public as a company. “I can’t afford seventy dollars a share,” I said to myself. Come on, Darrin in the past, buy some of those shares in a hurry and keep them forever. Where is that thing where you can send a message to you in the past?

What makes a story become successful? Well, an original story idea often goes a long way. And don’t make it too short or too long.

What else? Well, keep it interesting and display good writing too. Plus, make sure to have an actual story in there somewhere, so you can take your readers somewhere.

One time I had a friend who worked in the field of International Relations. She was gone for a couple weeks.

“You went around the whole planet?" I said when she got back to the office. I help up the globe to show her.

“First, it was Europe,” I said. "Then you went to South Africa, India, Japan and now back to California. You flew around the world."

“I guess you’re right."

She went to her office and closed the door. I figured she was tired so I gave her some space.

Goodness, I was so excited at how some people could do a business trip that had them fly all the way around our little Earth.

Anyway, always remember that your next story or content could be a big hit. If it’s not, that’s okay too. Just keep having fun.
