The evening with lessons from squirrels
A few days ago I was enjoying my evening walk in the park. A squirrel caught my attention. I started following it. There was still sunshine. I usually do not sit down while taking a walk but I could not take my eyes off the squirrel.
I saw the squirrel was carrying a big log a little bigger than its own size.
I found the squirrel moving up and down the tree very engaging and kept looking at its movements.
My friend joined me and we sat in wrapt attention.
The squirrel ran helter and skelter. We made no movement because it is sensitive and immediately runs away.
We saw that the squirrel faced many obstacles during its journey, paused, and when something tried to waylay it took a diversion, but then continued towards its destination.
The squirrel came across a mound in the tree. It stopped and analyzed, and then laid the huge log over the crack, walked over the log, picked the log on the other side then continued on its journey.
We were captivated by the cleverness of the squirrel. It was making its house full of twigs and moss. A squirrel usually makes its nest for winter.
The nest is called dreys. It has many layers of twigs and some small fine logs that it can pick up to secure its nest. (More about the nests you can be read in a story by New York Times.)
The incident left us in awe to think that its flexible body can carry weight and lug it along to keep itself secure.
In front of our eyes, we saw that the squirrel with its light and small body had a brain to think, analyze, contemplate, reason, explore, discover and overcome.
A while later the squirrel went inside the tree and did not come out. It probably reached its destination — a tiny hole in the tree which looked like the entrance to its hidden dwelling of treys.
The squirrel left behind the log. It probably could not take it in the tree hole. How could this squirrel take this log inside the small hole it had managed to take up to the tree hole in the branch?
So after all the painstaking and hard work and exercising great skills, overcoming all the difficulties along the way, just left behind the log and went home without it.
So the squirrel really did not have a brain and had not thought about the end before it began its challenging journey and in the end, the log was only a burden to it.
Human beings are as silly as squirrels.
This is the truth about our lives too.
I learned a great lesson.
Lesson 1️⃣
When we reflect on our lives we find that
We worry about our family, our job, about how to earn more money, where we should make a house and live, what kind of a car to buy, what dress to wear to a party, and what gadgets to buy and upgrade, only to abandon all these things when we reach our final destination.
In our life’s journey some things are just burdens that we are carrying with utmost care and fear of losing them, only to find at the end, they are useless and we can’t take them with us. We have to leave it behind for others to enjoy.
The squirrel vanished inside the tree hole where it had to leave the log outside which it could not use.
I had to learn another lesson too on that day because just as I was thinking and making comparisons with what the squirrel had done and what human beings also do but should not do What did I see?
Lesson 2️⃣
“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” — Helen Keller
The squirrel returned with a team of 10–15 squirrels. The team broke the log and crushed it into small pieces with their teeth and took them inside the hole. I was so inspired by them.
Each team player is valuable when he decides to play his part with full responsibility.
What are the takeaways?
✨ Never give up your effort. If you do, you will leave all the hard work in between and not have any advantage in life. Completion of a task comes together when you work slowly and steadily and continue to make an effort in your life.
✨ Together as a team, Nothing is Impossible. Each team player knows that he is valuable and has a part in the joint work and responsibly does his work. No house can be built alone. See above in the picture. So many people are working together, each playing his part to complete the building.
✨Do not carry/buy things more than you can use or have any need for. If you carry more than what you can use, it will be enjoyed by others after you. So you do not make an effort for yourself but for others . I think we should decide on the present.
Isn’t it amazing how much we can learn from even squirrels? Any other perspective that you could derive? Do share your views.
