How does one become the next King of Pop? Any music fan would know that title belongs to Michael Jackson, but he has been dead for 13 years. Should another artist ascend to his throne, or should anyone at all be named as his successor?
Questions that are all valid to ask, now that Rolling Stone UK is in its latest issue, or is it, its first global issue, names Harry Styles on its cover, the next King of Pop, and as with anything these days, it set Twitter ablaze in a fire.
“Everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it.”

Michael Jackson, the King of Pop
I said it many times, songs become part of the soundtrack of our lives. I’m in my 50s. Aside from loving the music that I used to hear as a child from my Mom. I have learned to appreciate many artists throughout my adult life.
Many of the songs that I loved all bring back memories, not all good by the way.
Recently, I shared how the death of Olivia Newton-John brought back an almost forgotten memory of a boy I once loved, my very own John Travolta.
The lyrics, the melody, and the beat of these songs will be forever intertwined with the times of my life and become a constant reminder of the years that had gone by.
I don’t expect people from the younger generation to be any different.
I still listen to new artists, because today’s songs remain stories that never get old like love and suffering.
A broken heart? You don’t need to look far, you can listen to Adele.
There will be artists that will forever be associated with our own generation and it just so happened that with mine, it was Michael Jackson.
Who can ever forget the album, Thriller? Is Thriller the most successful album of all time?Well, It sold more than any album for 30 years in America, until that record was broken when the Eagles’ album “Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975” recently surpassed Michael Jackson’s classic album in terms of all-time American sales (38 million, according to the RIAA), Jackson’s classic album remains the best-selling album ever in terms of global sales.
Everything about Thriller was iconic — the songs, the dance moves, and the music video.

And in 1989, Elizabeth Taylor another legend who was one of Michael Jackson’s closest friends called him in an award show, ‘the King of Pop, Rock, and Soul.’
From a compliment coming from a dear friend, to which his fans, the media, and the public accepted to be his rightful title, Michael Jackson was crowned the King of Pop.
Here’s a clip from Oprah’s interview with Michael Jackson.
Harry Styles, the next King of Pop?
We are protective of our music idols, when BTS was called the ‘next Beatles,’ It was also widely debated on Twitter.
“We’ve never ever been like The Beatles or even, like, more than them. We’re just like seven normal kids who love music and performance, who have a dream to give hope and love and positive energy and inspiration to the people in the world.” — RM.
In the Rolling Stone UK interview, you get a glimpse of the person behind the persona, and there are a lot of things that are good about Harry Styles.
If you think everything was easy for Harry Styles then you are wrong. From the X Factor stagewhere it all started, to countless hours rehearsing and performing in front of live audiences around the world. Yes, and as part of One Direction, the phenomenal boyband who to this day has millions of adoring fans.
We also know that many times when a boyband disbands it is hard for anyone to make a solo career.
One has to work harder, you can only look at the careers of Sir Paul McCartney of the Beatles, Justine Timberlake of NSYNC, and Ricky Martin of the Menudo to name a few.
Harry Styles paid his dues.
Final words
Harry Styles may not be the new King of Pop. I will leave it up to you to decide if he is or he is not.
He is definitely an artist charting his course leaving his mark through his songs, movies, and words.
Aside from his singing career, he has done movies too. While many will remember him as part of the Marvel multiverse playing the role of Eros, he is also in movies that speak a lot about him as an artist.
In My Policeman, he is playing a gay policeman, to which he is quoted from another Rolling Stones interview.
‘It’s about love and wasted time’ — Harry Styles
From his gender-bending fashion for which he is either welcomed or criticized depending on which side of the fence you are sitting. Some say, he queerbaiting, profiting off queer aesthetics, without being officially part of the community.
But aren’t Mick Jagger and David Bowie known for their non-conforming fashion and lifestyle too?
His love life is under scrutiny now that he is dating Olivia Wilde the female director in his other movie Don’t Worry Darling who is also ten years older than him.
He thinks hard about love, shame, honesty, and the importance of kindness and therapy. And he worries. He worries about how he can be one of the biggest pop stars in the world, the kind who can be everything for his fans while also being a great son, brother, friend, and partner to the people standing beside him.
Like any artist, many of his fans can’t separate the person from the celebrity. When like most of us, Harry Styles is trying to figure out his life.
It only becomes harder when you are 24/7 in the spotlight.
“Everyone, including myself, has your own journey with figuring out sexuality and getting more comfortable with it”— Harry Styles
Again, in the end, it will be his songs that will remain years from now. When this generation becomes my generation of today, they too will look back at their memories from their past, the songs that made it to the playlist of the soundtrack of their lives.
They will remember Harry Styles for the lyrics, the melody, and the beat of his songs.
Will they remember him as their King of Pop? I don’t know and will it matter?
