The Villainous ways of your Favorite Social Media Hero
I sunk $6K into my social media hero to learn these lessons so you don’t have to.
Not all heroes wear capes, but villains do have social media accounts.
As a productivity coach who serves solopreneurs, it is my duty to share ways to conquer those who seek to hold power over you and your business.
Think your favorite social media guru isn’t holding power over you?
Come closer my precious solopreneur, let me tell you a story.
A hero serves the people, while a villain only serves their purpose.
Being a part of FB groups within the coaching world grants me the opportunity to see a lot of things behind the scenes. Stuff that makes my skin crawl when seeing the way some don’t serve their communities.
For example, I paid $6K to join a certain coaches program. It came with hours of lessons, a weekly group call, and access to a private FB group. This program was from a coach, who coaches other coaches… yeah, they got me.
Now seeing that this is a method that many use in the online space, I refuse to coach other coaches. My work is best served with solopreneurs who are service providers across a spectrum of business types.
Anyway, before I get to my own personal $6K lesson, let me share with you a lesson I gathered from someone else's experience.
This lady in the group posted one day asking about email marketing. The coach who taught this program educated you on how to get clients via IG. Yeah, you’re supposed to pander to IG all day every day in order to get money in your bank account. (Foolish if you ask me)
How do you think this coach responded to someone asking about email marketing? Just about how you’d expect an IG expert too. By telling them not to worry about email marketing and just follow the program by getting clients on IG. Do that, and you won’t have to worry about email marketing ever.
Bad advice here. First, because we don’t own IG. So, if they get clients there, but don’t have their information, then get kicked off, welp, there goes their business.
Second, this method is only focused on hoping IG loves you enough to get eyes on your content. A force you don’t control — but you’re supposed to spend days, weeks, and months pandering to the social media gods hoping people watch your reels you spent hours making.
This villain served their purpose. Not the purpose of the group.
What’s a better way to respond in a fashion that serves the group? And builds a deeper bond with your audience?
Even if this coach doesn’t know much about email marketing(side note — they used email marketing to promote their services while telling someone else not to, I was on their email list…I've since unsubbed) they could have provided some resources to aid them.
For example, they could have asked others in the group who else had an interest in this. When others responded, they could have brought an email marketer into the group to answer questions and provide content.
This would have done a few things. The group would appreciate the effort put out to serve them better towards THEIR mission. And the email marketer would have appreciated more exposure to their audience. A win-win for all.
How could the coach who lead the group win?
For starters, don’t you think that email marketer would have returned the favor at some point by either mentioning or recommending the coaches program to people they came across who needed those services? I’d bet at some point they would have.
Secondly, if this coach decided to provide a deeper level of superior service those within the tribe would have kept them top of mind. Anytime they need something and that coaches offer to solve it, they’d be happy to pull out their credit cards. Because they’d know trust this coach to serve them in every way possible.

My $6K learning lesson I should have realized on the strategy call
Anybody who tells you to lie or deceive your significant other isn’t a hero.
The lesson that follows is why I dive deep into leaders before I engage and why I watch to see what they do over what they say they’ll do for you.
This program I mentioned earlier taught me my first lesson in this online space years ago.
It was that some heroes are villains in disguise out for their purpose over yours.
I’ll skip to the chase. This coach had a lesson on how to handle objections when you’re on sales calls. And one of the typical reasons people will object to your offer might be them saying I have to talk to my spouse. This is understandable of course before making a sizable investment.
Well, how do you think this coach said to overcome this objection? Basically, you tell them not to tell their spouse. He doesn’t say it outright but in so many words.
He says, “You tell them that you found when people sign up with the program now and take action they get the best results. See, if you sign up now, do the lessons, and begin getting clients in 30 days your significant other won’t even care that you bought this program as it would have paid for itself in a quick fashion.”
When I heard this I legit stopped the video and pushed away from my computer. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I said aloud, “You want me to tell people to lie to their spouse about spending money?!”
Then I remembered. THEY SAID THE SAME DAMN THING TO ME ON THE STRATEGY CALL!
When the guy said it, I felt this ting in the pit of my stomach that said it was wrong. But I was such a fan, nothing was going to change my mind.
I did tell my wife at the time about the money I spent. She wasn’t home when I had the call, but the thought of not telling her about it really made me sick. I couldn’t keep something like this from her. She understood and didn’t have a problem.
That’s why this coach, not all coaches, are the villains of social media that you need to watch out for. They are all after their own purpose, not your purpose.
I believe that we as coaches can be on our path of fulfillment while helping others on their journey. There is no reason I should sh*t on your path to ensure mine stays straight.
This kind of thinking is fear-based to me. The longer they can keep you suckling on the t*t of their content, the longer they hold power over you.
My program ain’t for everybody, hence why it ain't cheap. And if you feel there is a better avenue for you to get YOUR goals accomplished, then the only question I have is…..
How can I help you get there?
