During a Big Life Change, Your Soul Self Has Your Number.
Expect the unexpected.
Signs. Nudges. Encouragements. Shoves. Synchronicities. Your Soul Self, the part of you free of your personality, communicates all the time. Sometimes full on. Sometimes subtly. Sometimes sneakily.
Sneakily?
It took me ages to catch on. When my Soul Self absolutely wanted me to make a big change, it knew what to do.
It sent me a good-looking guy.
The first one opened a new world.
I shared a rundown house in college. Me, the timid wasp. Sue the militant vegetarian. Sheila the neurotic artist. Howie the weird film student. Sam the accountant in training with a taste for porn. A motley crew for sure.
Having our own place made us incredibly popular. Among the perpetual hanger-outers was a Transcendental Meditation teacher. He was John Lennon-ish — lean, intelligent, funny. We talked into dawns about Indian spirituality and meditation.
I wanted to take the plunge but initiation meant being drug-free for a month. To a college student in the mid-’70s, this was a major challenge.
Finally, I passed on the pot and, on the first try, had what’s called ‘a tiptoe past the elephants’ experience. The initiation (done by the same flame) sent me right into bliss. It took a couple of decades to get back there from time to time.
He and I continued our talks and walks but nothing more. I could never figure it out. I mean, how many books of Rumi could he give me before a kiss? Finally, we drifted apart. But spirituality remained a major part of my life.
The Buddha belly laugh answer arrived many years later. We ran into each other on the street. Had a cup of coffee. Over which he told me he’d taken a vow of celibacy the year of our encounter. I was like — well you could have TOLD me.
Mystery solved. It seems we were meant to mingle souls but not bodies.
The next man brought a major career change in tow. An account exec at my agency raved about her shiatsu session. Being cheap, I waited to see if she’d go again. She did. For the second and last time.
He was tall, Keanu Reeves hunky with the same low key, intense, thoughtfulness. OK, I’ll pay to let him have his way with me.
He was an excellent practitioner and teacher. (Again!) Our many conversations included shiatsu but also his utterly disastrous romantic life. I stuck to only taking courses with him. Before I knew it, I’d left advertising to practice and teach Shiatsu.
Then one day I switched continents. What made me do that?
A young Frenchman I’d met during a London-Paris vacation celebrating a zero birthday year. We cross-ocean romanced for a while until something had to give — my bank account or my life. I moved to France.
This was not on my list of things to do. But he was, again, irresistible. Tall, clowny humor, artistic, insightful…
Et voilà! Another not-on-my-list major life change done and dusted. The Soul Self is very, very clever.
At least I got to keep the guy this time.
We talk a lot about how signs, dreams, and pain bring us lessons. And this is all true. But sometimes we’re sent something irresistible to entice us down new path. Could be an animal, a vacation, a film, a present… the list is endless.
So, look through your life. How have you been lured into embarking on something you never thought you’d do?
You can bet your Soul Self had a hand in it.
